Default Cam Timing

I am working on an older Club Car KF 82 side valve engine for a friend. It had no compression and would not start. I took the side cover off and found the cam gear rivets had broken and the gear was off the cam and had teeth missing. We ordered a new cam and gaskets which I have sitting on the work bench. My question is, do I just line up the timing marks on the crank and cam? Is there anything I need to watch for when putting this engine back together? I did not pull the head or anything else off the engine, just the side cover off the crankcase.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

I guess no one has the old side valve engine. I am going over to the Club Car dealer tomorrow and see if they will let me look at the factory service manual (FSM)

Hi oops,
My manual just says to align the timing marks and install shims (thin flat washers)
