Default kf82 smoking after rod replacement

i replaced the rod in a kf82 because the rod bolts came lose, i put the motor back together, got it running, it has been about a week now and the customer says its smoking, i went out to his house, adjusted out the carb screwed the needed all the way in and backed it out 1/2 turn to a full turn and the smoke seems to of cleared, i checked the compression and it has a 100 pounds of compression when it is cold and hot.

100lbs is very low. I suspect you are getting oil up past the rings. 125psi is the least I'd like to see on a tired KF82 motor. Adjusting the carb will achieve next to nothing. Rod bolts don't come loose for no reason and for sure, tightening them fixes nothing. If that big end was loose and chattering on the crank there is excessive wear on the journal or the con rod not to mention other areas of the motor.

Not a good number This is well under spec. It will run, it will function but then so will will a man with one lung. Doesn't mean it can climb a hill without puffing. I suspect your customers engine is pretty worn out James and fiddling with it is only going to cause you both a nuisance. I have made the mistake of trying the cheaper fix so many times to keep people happy that it cost me money. Bite the bullet and do it right the first time. You'll both sleep easier.

so it would be cheaper to go on and go through the top end, and replace the rings, along with grinding and seating the valves.

James, you can try but at the end of the day you are dealing with a tired engine. Restoring compression will just add stress to the worn crankshaft bearings etc. The best way is to either rebuild or replace the whole thing. Trust me, I've been there mate.
