Default melt down

well, my son decided he was gonna install a horn, he installs the horn no problem, takes the cart out for a ride, and he catches the *** thing on fire.
calls his buddy, (NOT ME, HELL I AM HIS DAD) they tow it to his freinds house, where they try and fix it themselves, day an half later, i ask my son hey where the F%^& is my cart, it finally shows up in my gargage.

OMG!!!!!!!
red wires everywhere!!! my 65 dollar harley relay, (for my roadglide, not the cart) is where the old relay was,red wires attached to it. the key switch hanging down dangling with solid red wires.......
oh ya last but not least......micro switchs for the forward and reverse, you got it red wires....

these are the things that have me cussin. the red wires to the horn, lights and radio, dont bother me so much......but the starting circuit jeese o pete
i drove 30 miles to town and bought all the right color wire i am gonna need.

i have a service manual, and it seems to be helping alot, at least wich color wire to buy, but it say's i need a meter to check my key switch and relay, i dont have that meter, can you use a test light to check these 2 items,

the relay looks the same, but i think it is different,,dont know why i say that. but the old one smells like its burnt. so i know why they used it.

with the keyswitch on, should the white, and white/black stripe wire be hot?? if not what energizes it????

my game plan, is to start with the key switch, work down to the foward & reverse switches, then to the gas pedal switches, and finally the relay. or should i do it in a different order?

Don't be too hard on him, he tried to fix it
Gas cart ~ all ya need is a test light for basics.
Nice the boy has an interest in electronics, Dad.

Maybe he needs his own little boomber to work on?

I'd take a stick to my kids arse if he pulled a stunt like that. "Interest in electronics" my scrotum. Why couldn't the lad just be honest and "fess" up to his Dad in the first place ? Bloody tree huggers are killing this world

"You can Never Bitch at someone, for something, that you have done Yourself!"
Son has got Dad's mechanical aptitude. The way I see it, they could have towed it to your garage and it would not be running.

day 3

got most of the wires re-run, and still no go.
i guess when i head to the mainland i will buy a ohmn meter this weekend,
i have a service and engine manual, the problem is i cant understand what i am reading (dumb texas plow boy)

wondering if that harley Solenoid could be the pronlem
i got the key switch re-wired, is there a way to check it with a test light

black wire is the ground
red wire is always hot
blue and yellow wire become hot when key is turned on
white and white/ black wire i know where they go....i just dont understand
if those wires are ground too, or if a switch powers it up?
