Carryall Axle Oil
I'm second guessing myself because of so many conflicting answers around the internet. I changed mt trans and axle oil with what the manual called for. (SAE 30 in the rear and 80-90 in the trans) I feel like, for some reason there should be 80-90 in the rear, not SAE 30. Second question, what's the difference in the two?

Re: Carryall Axle Oil
I'm going to have to agree with Doc, I think you have them reversed!
It's always been to my understanding that the 30 goes in the top, and the 80w-90 goes in the bottom. Now... with that being said... My buddy has a 94 DS, he's been using 80w-90 in both top and bottom for the last 4 years with no ill effect! His reasoning for it is that, there are gears in the transmission, and there are also gears in the differential. His other reasoning is that when it's time to change the fluids, he doesn't need to buy 3 different viscosity's of oil, (10w-30 for the engine, 30SAE for the trans. and 80w-90 for the diff.) And store or dispose of what he has leftover! A number of people here (and also my CC dealer) use 80w-90 in both the trans. and diff., But, it's really a "to each... his own" discretion. my .02 |
