Default Advice needed-1985 gas club car for 1000 obo- worth it?

Hi, all. I'm new to golf carts and want to buy one to turn into a project for Burning Man. A local guy is selling a 1985 gas club car (looked year up via serial number), in good shape. He says he just gave it a tuneup and changed the oil, and it has a brand new wiring harness according to the ad.

Question: is this thing worth $1000? If not what should I offer? Here's the ad:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/spo/2914750274.html

Am I buying into a host of problems by potentially buying an older cart? Is this like buying cars? Or is it simpler due to smaller engine and less to go wrong? Help!

Can of worms there Brody, the cart looks to be in good shape but it's the old engine and parts are hard to find. A newer model CC would be a better bet imo for the same money but if you have to have it offer no more than $650. You won't get much more than that if you retail it but if it's a decent running low hour unit it might just be a diamond in the rough.

Thanks, good to know. I have about $1k to spend, and am having problems finding a good used gas cart that isn't from the 80s. I'm in the SF Bay area, so everything is more expensive, but even looking a hundred or two miles away it's still hard. Is it silly to think I can find a gas cart in good mechanical condition (cosmetics unimportant) for $1000?

Not at all. I can get mid 90's to 2000 and up carts here for $1000 but condition is important and regional variations are to be considered not to mention shipping fees or personal costs. These are all variables that need to be factored into your end price.

i would pass it up and wait for a new cart..............for 1000 you,ll find a newer one, problem isn,t with cart its with trying to find any parts if you need them.............some engine parts are no longer available and some are very costly, i would pass and wait.......now if the cart were only 500 but not for a grand........................................

If you want a long drive, I have a good running 1995 gas Club Car that is set up for 4 passengers. It runs great and I replaced the rear suspension with a unit that came out of a club car carry all (way more carry-power). I am disabled and getting out of the cart rebuilding business. I will let it go for $1,000 firm but will include the club racks in case you play, a club and ball washer, an extra DS body (the one on it is fine), and extra windshield or two (the one on the unit is also fine, but you never know). Oh and I will give you an extra set of tires. If you have something that gets fair gas mileage and a light trailer, you would be getting a bargain. (fcordier@lobo.net)

Thanks, but you're over 1000 miles from me. I'd pay pretty much half that in gas to get there and back, not to mention the huge pain in the ***. Not in any way realistic.
