Default Idea: an "unlimited button"

Background:

'01 DS with stock tires, healthy 290, new clutches, no governor, rev-limiter enabled. Top speed about 22 MPH, but realistic top speed w/o risking a limiter bounce is 19-20. Cart is used on-road, mostly by me but also by friends, among hundreds of governed rental carts driven by tourists.

This season, a fleet of new EZ-Go gasser rental carts appeared, and the **** things cruise at about 14-15 mph. They're putting a dent in my passing ability, so I'm not happy! Several times now, I've needed some extra oomph to get around these tourists, but I hit my limiter.

So I got an idea. What if I put a normally-closed button on my dash, tied to the rev limiter's ground circuit? In those rare times that I need to get the revs into the low 4,000's, I could reach down and open that circuit, momentarilly defeating the limiter. My friends, who I've all taught to stay below 4,000, wouldn't be told about the function of this button.

Whattaya think?

Nuh-uh! It's bad enough that I struggle to pass a rental, but I refuse to BE PASSED by one!

I think it would work perfectly! (just don't tell your friends about it!)

I, personally would try to adjust the governor to 4200/4300 rpms w/o the limiter,
pass 'em with a short spurt, and just be done with it!

It's not a good idea for the engine to bounce off of the limiter! no matter who's driving it!

Good point. I actually gave that a half-hearted attempt a few months ago, but with the governor arm tightened as far as it will go and the zip-tie removed, the governor still isn't active.

It will probably be less work to adjust the governor than wiring a unlimiter switch, but not quite as fun as having a secret "nitro" switch. :)

You guys scare me to death talking about 4000+ RPMs.... I've seen way too many of them blown up due to overrevving. Why not invest in a high speed clutch or gear setup?

Govenors? We Don't Need No Stinking Govenors!!!Go Fast Or Go Home!Seriously though,Go with a gear-set and drop your rpm.My clutch setup on my Opposed lets me take off and cruise like a bone-stock cart. Then if I mash it,it shifts the Secondary, picks the front-wheels about an inch or so,and Bye-Bye!Pure Evil

Yeah David... I know what your saying!

I can literally hear my FE350 overreving when (and IF) I get to that point!
I won't say what my rpm's are, only because some may push it to that point and continue pushing!
that's pretty much why I say "a short spurt"!

all in all... what tahoedawgZ71 is saying, long runs at higher then normal rpm's will blow your engine up! and I couldn't agree more!

but at the same time... bouncing off of the limiter may do the same thing!

It's kind of a "Catch 22" so... be careful!
