Default FE350 crankshaft question

Before you say search I already have. Has anyone removed the balance weight on the FE350 and if so how did it run? I pulled mine apart tonight after my son ran it w/ out oil last night and it started knocking. I found on the clutch side that the arm that goes on the crank to the weight moves up and down freely but on the fan side it fits the crank rather well. Is it supposed to move around a lot?

Here's a repair manual for the FE engines, page 3-54, thru 3-60 may explain some things.

most of the jargon is Greek to me, but from what I can tell, the balancer link rod should be tight at the crankshaft gear,
and loose on the other side... how loose??? it probably shouldn't be loose enough to make it knock!

hope this helps!

Looks like I'm gonna need a crankshaft. Talked to Club Car directly this morning and was told there should not be any play. Thanks for link so I could try to figure it out before dropping big money into a rebuild.
