burns oil after carb butterfly was eaten
I was having a problem with the cart idling and found out half the butterfly was gone. I'm assuming it went into the head. I replaced the carb and all seemed to be alright. Now Im burning oil and it didnt before. It dosent really smoke that much, maybe a little but you can smell a burnt oil smell after it been running awhile. So far it dosnt seem to have lost power at least as far as i can tell. I know that I'll end up tearing it apart but do you guys have any ideas as to whats bad or any thought as to where the half of butterfly ended up? It's my kids cart so that thing is going 24/7 at the campground. It wouldnt be abnormal to go almost through a 1/2 quart of oil in a few days with them driving it as much as they do. I will be tearing into this once the snow flys but would just like your thoughts if you have time. 1994 Club car FE290

Re: burns oil after carb butterfly was eaten
I had one cart do that. It was pretty ugly. The little butterfly screw got in everywhere it shouldn't have... meaning between valves and valve seats and between piston and cylinder wall. The motor was a loss. Hopefully yours is not as bad. Stop and pull the head.

Ya luckly for me the screws were intact it was just half the butterfly that went missing. I suppose I shouldnt say lucky until I see the damage.

Re: burns oil after carb butterfly was eaten
I know this is an old thread but I was finally able to take some time out and look at this thing. Well, my compression is like 180 according to my gage so it's no wonder I still have good power. The valves look to be in good shape, no tell tale signs looking from the top. Once I pulled the head I found burnt oil underneath the valves and on top of the piston. The spark pulg has burnt oil encrusted on it also. The bore looked good with no scratches, although very smooth and glazed. I measured the bore with a telescoping gage and a mic in numerous places with the piston at bdc and I'm getting 3.072 which is only .002 different than the manual says it should be, so not terrible there so far (at least in the places I could measrue). All in all I think I just plain have an oil ring thats not sealing well enough to keep the oil down. At this point I think I will bite the bullet and start total tear down and take it to the machine shop for a bore and hone. While I'm at it I'll check the guides, lap the valves and replace the seals. Of coarse new gaskets and seals also. I never did find that other half of that carb butterfly anywhere. So, anything else to add to my findings? Also does anyone know what piston to cylinder wall clearance should be after rebore and hone, i'm thinking like .003 total but need to be sure (I know I need the piston before I take it in).
Thanks, Nick |

Ring gap is going to dictate bore size. That dimension should be in the manual |
