Default Home Made Drive Clutch Removal Tool for Club Cars

This is for you guys with the old Salsbury style clutches that were used from 1984 to 1987.5. This tool will not remove the clutch from an '88-up motor.

This tool works for this style clutch:

Sorry I didn't record the thread size of the bolt and I don't know how to measure the threads to see what size it is. You'll have to figure that out. But here's the rest.

All you need is the bolt (1.5" underhead length), and a 1/2" steel rod. Cut the steel rod to 4 1/8" and you're done.

To remove the clutch:
  1. Remove the long center bolt
  2. Insert the 1/2" steel rod into the hole
  3. Thread in the 1.5" (uhl) bolt into the clutch
  4. Using an impact gun, run the bolt in until the clutch pops off

This was a recent post by a member who created a clutch removal tool for the 1988+ drive clutches, so I thought I'd post it here for good measure.

This tool works for this style clutch:

A quick hit with my impact wrench (about 1 second) and it was off.

Oh, and lots of never-seize too. lol
AND, anybody reading only the end of this thread, BE SURE TO USE A GRADE 8 BOLT AND PUSHER. soft steel is not a good idea with this operation. You can create a nightmare I think....

Toss this in while you are at it. If anyone wants to pickup the seal somewhere other than a cart dealer, I went to a local industrial supply shop, they crossed it to a Timken 30X50X7. It was about $6.50 out the door.

What is the diameter of the pusher rod, and where do you find grade 8 rod?

Another post I read yesterday used a 3/8" bolt, 6" long. Cut off the head and grind off the threads.

Then use a 1" long 7/16-20 (fine) bolt.

Not sure of the exact diameter, just get something close to the size of the stock bolt that holds the clutch on, it doesn't have to be a perfect fit, the pusher just needs to reach the bottom of the hole in order to "push" the clutch off when the bolt is threaded down. Grade 8 bolts can probably be gotten at one of the larger hardware stores. You can tell by the dashes on the head of the bolt. The more dashes around the head of the bolt, the stronger it is. A grade 8 bolt will have 6 dashes around the top of the bolt head.

Thank you thank you. I ordered one from eBay. I was warned it was soft. I was very careful, but it flared with only small hand wrench torque. I remembered I do have a grade 8 (CAT) bolt. I cut off head, ground down threads. The bolt in the kit was grade 8 and with impact wrench in one second it was off. Harbor Freight has a three bolt puller.

I cut a 1/4" X 6" socket extension. cut it down to 5 1/4" and then bought a 7/16-20 x 1 1/2" grade 8 bolt to thread into there to run it off works good. the ratchet extension is hardened. this works for 1988+ clutches
