Carb floods out during operation

I'm a new owner of a 2002 Club Car. After running 15 to 20 minutes the engine will begin intermittently cutting out, then continue running fine for a few more minutes, cut out again, more frequently until it just coasts to a stop completely. Attempts to restart fail. Removing the air intake hose from the carb indicates that it has apparently loaded up and flooded out. After 10 or so minutes it will restart, and the process begins again.

This is a consignment cart bought from a cart dealer/repair shop. He has replaced the carb for me once and says it's fixed but apparently doesn't drive it around long enough for the problem to show up. Now his position is that I bought it "as is" and has kind of washed his hands.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

It has had this same issue with two different carburetors?

Yes. It acted the same with the first carburetor, which was also supposed to be new, but was leaking at the bowl gasket. Replacing it stopped the leak but didn't fix the problem.

Are you sure he put a new carb on? The service guy may have just realized that it was leaking and fixed the bowl gasket (assuming that would fix the issue) and said it was a new carb. I realize that would be dishonest and scummy but it's entirely possible.

I would pull the carb and tear it apart. My guess would be that either the float isn't operating properly or the needle/seat are no good.

The next time it quits and won't start, try these two things:

• Pop the fuel line off at the carburetor and see if it still spits fuel when you step on the gas.
  
• Pull the spark plug out and hold it against the engine (to ground it), hit the gas and watch to see if it's sparking. Also, if your fuel test showed that it was spitting fuel like it should, the spark plug and chamber should be wet with fuel.

Thanks, I'll try that. On another thread it looks like the air filter could be an issue as well, so I'll look into that too.

If the motor is running intermittently, the intake hose will be moist from fuel spray. I would lean toward a spark issue. Along with the air filter, make sure that the intake hose isn't collapsing while trying to start. Hoses soften from heat over the years.

I Have the same problem with my 04 club car. I have since replaced everything but the engine. Let me know how you make out.

Check the clear plastic vent hose coming off the carb. If its plugged up it will flood out. This fixed my problem. She runs like a top now!

As usual, I don't have the patients to do just one thing at a time! It seems to be fixed, but I did several things and any one or combination could have done the trick.

The air filter was definitely leaking air as part of the edge seal was torn. Replaced that. The clear tube off the bottom of the carb was oily and clogged. Cleaned that. The spark plug had black soot on it, so I replaced it with a non-resister type spark plug which also is a little hotter than the resister type per the gal a Auto Zone. Knock on wood, it's may be running okay now. Thanks for all the help!
