Default Broken belt or something more??

So, I took the 88 CC DS out golfing last night and I drove all the way from the storage shed to the middle of the sixth hole and it was running like a top. Has I took off again and came upto speed i started to hear a clunking noise (so bad i thought i popped the motor) and the cart was kinda stuttering some. So i stopped and checked out the motor and noticed the Big Clutch belt was frayed some. Thinking nothing of it i got back in and cruised some at low speed and it seemed ok, and once it "leveld out" and started picking up speed it started clunking again. Stopped and checked and now the clutch belt was on backwards and had a "crack/break" in it. So i rolled it off, it was hot. and turned it around and put it back on. I said screw it and went to take it in and get a rental... and as i was driving in the belt snapped completely.

Was it just a bad belt, the belt was a year old or something more serious?

Just drove out to the course to make sure they pulled it into the garage for me last night and got the belt off... it is like shredded... not just broken like i thought.

Don't know if that matters, but i thought i'd share.

Hard to wear a belt out in a year.
Maybe OLD stock when you bought it.
What brand?
Check your clutches for breakage or excessive slop.

What do you mean? how do I do that? I put a new Clutch Spring and slides in the back clutch this spring, but have taken it out 50 times with no issue.

Grab the movable sheave and see if it wiggle excessively, look for cracked or broken sheaves.

Before you put a new belt on make sure you get all the strands out of there. I know on the snowmobiles when the belts shred like that the rubber strings like to wrap around the crank shaft (and input shaft for the drive system) behind the clutch.

As for diagnosing the cause I would check your clutch alignment as well. It doesn't take much of a misalignment to build extra heat in the belt and heat is the killer of belts.

So, I took out the new belt and there is no holes or cracks or anything on the Clutch Sheaves. The "rear" Driven clutch seems to be closed all the way and the belt is seating on the very top now. Don't know if it was like that before. But i haven't run it so idk if it broke and was that way, it was at full speed when it broke. This new belt seems a little tighter then the old belt to... could just be in my head. but IDK.
