Thumbs up Throttle ON or Throttle OFF

I own a 1995 Club Car DS that I purchased used from a dealer this spring.
My issue that I am looking for help with today is that it seems like the throttle is either wide open or the engine shuts off.
Immediately when I depress the throttle to the start point, the cart takes off at full throttle, reaches the rev limiter point, then shuts off, then after the speed drops restarts, accelerates to the rev point, then shuts off again. On and on this goes.
There is basically no detectible throttle control other than on (wide open) and off. I noticed that there is a ground wire that is frayed and broken. I will lengthen the wire and reattach before I respond again. I removed the "black box: cover and inspected the throttle cable travel. It seems smooth and is not restricted. The cable housing looks good as well. I have adjusted the throttle cable slightly, but it didn't seem to make a difference.
In the past I have secured the carb choke box in the proper location, this took care of a starting issue and a backfire issue as well. I had a push rod slip out and put that back in place. This slipped out going down a hill, so it may have have been related to slight over-revving or the backfire issue. After reinserting the pushrod, I now have a bit of a popping noise on deceleration on occasion. I assume this is a valve setting issue and want to take care of my issues one at a time.
It is so jerky that my wife is afraid to operate it.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Seems to be a lot of this going around. It usually centers around the butterfly not working properly. (or missing!) Here are a couple of threads discussing similar problems:

Thank you for you input.
I will try to work in the butterfly and get back to the forum in a few days.

Based upon the info provided, we did some investigating and found that the butterfly was missing al righty.
We were finally able to locate the butterfly and dig it out with a needle nose pliers & remove it, but the screws were no where to be found. The butterfly was bent and the screw hole were enlarged.
After further examination we realized that the throttle shaft was very worn also.
I was unable to find these replacement parts, so I have ordered a replacement carb & carb gasket, for just under $100 shipping included.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info, and sorry about your carb. It is always so helpful when people come back and reply when they actually find the problem. Hopefully you'll be up and running soon!

Yup, it's a "common" problem and comes up on here alot.

As a matter of fact, the reason I came on here today is that I too am now missing the butterfly off of my carb as well!! I noticed the jumpy throttle at the end of our up north weekend and after a quick ride last night I pretty much knew what I was going to find when I peeked into the carb.....

I am doing a quick search today to see if anyone sells just the butterfly. Anyone ever seen just the butterfly available or will I end up buying a new carb instead?

Chances are your butterfly shaft is worn or the hole it goes into is oversized and that may be why it let loose. Look at it real carefully and wiggle it around to make sure its still tight in the housing.

Nicky has it pretty much right on the money!

My concern is Bob's "missing" butterfly screws!
those will tear the engine up if the head doesn't get pulled off to try to locate them!

Well, pulled the carb off yesterday and..........the butterfly was on and fine. Guess I couldn't see it in there trying to crain my neck with it still on the cart. So my first thought was "well that's good" which was then followed closely by "so if the butterfly is fine than what the heck is the issue....".

After getting the carb back on I hooked the throttle cable back up to the carb and noticed that the shaft there seemed to be moving about pretty free and easy..................Ahh HA!!!!! Somewhere along the way my throttle return spring went on a hiatus and has yet to return. With no throttle return spring my throttle is just chilling wide open all the time. Not sure how it came off, I assume it broke somehow.

Have a new one on the way and should be back up and running soon.

Wow that is great to hear. Glad it's an easy fix. Yup those little screws can tear that bore up in no time.
