Default Weird new problem....

I'm trying to track down an intermittent problem.

When driving around town the motor will sometimes start to stutter. It acts as if it's running out of gas. Stutters or hesitates a little and loosed some speed/power. There are no unusual noises associated with this and it never continues for long. This always happens after a relatively long stretch of straight road or after a hill where I have the throttle wide open for a bit. If I let off the gas to say half throttle for a bit it goes away. If I pull over for event 10-15 seconds it runs fine again.

Initially I thought it was simply a bad fuel pump as my fuel filters were always almost empty and there didn't seem to be much fuel flowing. I installed a new pump and the fuel lines and filters are now full and flowing but the problem is still happening.
Perhaps it's not fuel. Maybe spark? Could my coil be getting old and weak? Would it start to fail at high speed due to heat? Would I expect backfires if that were the case? Any other ideas??

Details:
'97 CC DS
FE290
Big carb jet
K&N filter
Gov. disabled
Rev Limiter disabled

Thanks in advance!!

I have induced the wisdom of various "Old school Wizards" over the years and not a one of us can come up with a conclusive answer. The ignition coil will test perfectly on the bench but run you ragged on the trail. It'll cut off after 5, 10 15 minutes of running and after a rest period all is well again, Aggravating to say the least since the bugger is so inconveniantly located. My best advice is to purchase an inline spark plug checker from Autozone or whoever. Cheap. When the cart quits, pull the plug wire and connect it in line. No spark ? Coil issue. Simple fast and easy test.
Hope that helps.

Chris.

Cut the rev limiter ground wire. It kills the spark. When they start to go bad, they act like that.

Rev limiter is already disabled via an inline switch in the ground wire allowing me to turn it on or off.

Hadn't heard of a spark plug tester thingy...will try to find one. Pretty much if it's not fuel it must be spark.

Side note... pretty sure it's not fuel as I just cleaned and rebuilt the carb. Problem is the same before and after carb job. On to the ignition system....arrrrgggggg

Thanks

Spark plug tester is just a simple visible clear plastic tube that sits in line within the plug wire and the plug. It allows you to see whether a spark is occurring or not. Think of it as a secondary spark plug but exposed so you can see it's operation.
Here's a link. Cheap as chips and more help than you would ever think. http://compare.ebay.com/like/1210875...Types&var=sbar
