Newbe whats a clone
Hello New guy here. Been reading posts on here all week long about peoples clone swaps. I have a 92-96 club car carryall. Yes the fe290 turns ccw. Got the cart a few months back and the wife and kids love it, about 2 weeks ago lost spark and found out it was the rev-limiter I think. Put a new coil (97 & up) and took the ground wire off limiter. Cart never had any power but it was fine for them. We rode around for about 2 hours on Sunday, Took the GPS cause tach had not come to doorstep yep. Downhill all she had was 14-15 mph up hill was 9-10 mph. I thought ok all governors in place should 12 mph so I'm in the middle. Aslo with rev-limit hooked up before backfire sometimes and yes I know that aint good. Anyway having a great time carts running good. Then lost all power, nothing but starter turning. Towed it home, and flywheel turning superfast with starter and pulled plug and not a whisper of compression, I figure broke a rod aint tore it down yet. So anybody got some good build specs on putting clone in. I have read everything here about it and people are spacing the clone 1" - 2" above stock. Is there a good real # I can use since my cart is stock and going to use stock clutches. Going to keep exhaust, start/charging system. Just wondering for the correct motor plate height since my cart I cant take the back off. It's all aluminum frame and carryall welded together and I don't have a way to weld aluminum. Any thoughts Thanks a bunch and there will be plenty of pics with my build just stay tuned.

Re: Newbe whats a clone
a clone motor is a clone of a Honda gx390 13 hp motor, home depo sells one and harbor freight sells one,im doing one now on a 91 cc ds I lifted mine about 6'' and raised the motor up 4'' to clear the factory throttle box,i had to lower the throttle box down to clear the air cleaner that comes with the clone motor but it was pretty easy, you can fit one in without lifting the cart but I don't think you can still use the factory throttle box,i call it a throttle box because it has the throttle cable bell crank in it it also has the voltage regulator and solenoid in it im making a bracket for the starter/generater tomarrow,if you cant get the body off your carryall just take the rear swingarm/motor cradle out and work on it like that, you have to raise the motor up a few inches to clear the trans.hope this helped.............jay

Re: Newbe whats a clone
Does this clone motor require any body modifications or does it fit completely under the original body?

Re: Newbe whats a clone
All the ones I've seen will fit within the sides of the body easily. The only fitment issue I've ever seen is that some of the motors are too tall, and won't fit without at least a 3" lift to clear the frame crossover brace at the back of the seat.

Re: Newbe whats a clone
I'm interested in clone engines also. I checked the Harbor freight site and found a 13 HP (420cc) OHV Horizontal Shaft Gas Engine Predator Engines
Item #:69736 which sells for ~$350. Is this the clone you mentioned? I read some of the reviews on this (mixed but generally good). It comes with a pull start, does one transfer the starter generator form the original engine? Seems to me that a new engine for $350, if it will really do what it's supposed to, would be less than a good rebuild and give more HP to boot. Comments? |

Take a good look at Vegas Carts GenII
GX440. Geoff, one of our sponsors for this forum, really knows his stuff & is always very helpful. Looks to me, being an old roundy rounder, that he takes the time to research his motors an isn't afraid to postpone sales for the sake of excellent upgrades. Bang for the buck is head & shoulders above Harbor Freight and comes with intelligent support too! |

Re: Newbe whats a clone
Thanks guys for the advice, I have not bought my engine yet cause I'm still looking for the best buy on price like everybody else. From what I have seen the harbor freight is about $350. at 13hp, on ebay they have a red and a black clone for $359 free shipping and is a 15/16 horsepower. I have seen plenty of pics on this site with different types of clone engine and Honda engines in the carts. I guess what I was trying to ask is... I understand that a new mounting plate has to be fab up. that's not a problem. Does anyone know if I should raise the engine 1" to clear tranny and electric box or does
2" need to do this or more. Also this weekend I will take some pics of it before I start the build and as things go along I will give all details of how mine goes together and all my problems and cures |
