Default How high does the belt ride on drive clutch?

I just picked up a 2000 DS & the max speed I got was 10-11 mph on GPS, my 48 volt 1997 does 12-14 mph. The belt looked worn so I replaced it with a Napa 6013 belt, now it's even worse. How high does the belt ride in the drive clutch? Both belts seems to ride about 3/4" from the top of the drive clutch. It's hard to tell on the driven clutch but the wear pattern looks like it is about the same from the bottom of the clutch indicating it isn't sinking all the way down?

They don't go all the way out to the edge. 3/4" from the top at full rev sounds legit.

Thanks for the response, seems like you're the only guy whoever responds & I appreciate it. The sparky forum is much more active it seems. After checking the cart over today I found the air snorkel from the air box to the carb was torn. After using some duct tape for testing purposes I finally got a smoother idle & up to a whopping 12 mph, I'm unimpressed at this point considering my sparky does 14 mph lifted. I can't imagine this thing is running right at 12mph?

Have you zip-tied or removed the governor yet? Your cart can go faster than 12mph. You have a 9hp motor (FE290). My cart has an 8hp flathead motor, no governor, and will do 22mph. Granted, part of that is because of the larger tires (larger spinning diameter = higher top speed). Is your gas cart lifted?

Nope, not lifted, stock height. I may remove the governor tomorrow & see how it goes.

Just be mindful the governor is off and don't lead foot it. You could blow the motor if you push it too far. But you'll find with little effort, your cart will go faster.

if u lay a straight edge across the clutch faces, how worn are they? I was thinking about a 1/4" gap from the top was closer to normal. 3/4 sounds too excessive to me

3/8 inch from the top. If you use an aftermarket belt, it will go a little slower. Club car factory belts are a little longer. The belt rides higher and you go faster. You are only getting 3/4 from the top because your belt is shorter. Try a 1016203. No one makes a correct belt besides CC.

Remember - you want the engine belt to ride 'up' the clutch and the axle side to ride 'down' as it goes faster - if you're at the top of both when you're wound out you're not changing the ratio by 'opening' up the rear (driven) side of things. I'd pull it and clean it and make sure that it can operate smoothly - then look into springs that allow it to open up quicker.

Thanks for all the great advice, I've measured with the factory belt & Gates belt, still looks like 3/4" either way.
