Any ideas on my charging issue?
Hey Guys,
I figured I would ask you guys to see if I missed anything. I have a pioneer, just an FE350. Anyway it isn't charging. I checked my diode which I thought was the problem at first since it is some rigged deal but after cleaning everything up it is working. I tried grounding out the DF terminal with only a 2 volt increase in the output of the generator. I puller the generator and pulled the end bell off and all the brushes look fine. I didn't have any opens or shorts to ground. I only have 2 volts on the df terminal at full speed. Anything else I should look at before I call my generator doa because everything looks good on the generator Thanks, Also does anyone have the part number for the diode? Mine has been rigged with a couple legs off a bridge rectifier. |

Re: Any ideas on my charging issue?
It's kind of funny...
The bench test you did, didn't sound like a way to really test the S/G... but I could be wrong! Most tests I've done or heard of, were while the S/G was still in the cart! I've always tested the output voltage at the battery connections, with the cart in Maint. mode, at part to WOT, most of the time it turned out to be the voltage regulator if the readings at the battery were below 15.3V Here is the S/G regulator test (in the cart): Reg. test.jpg And I looked up the part number for the diode in my FE350 manual, It didn't have the value of it, but there is a CC part number... #1014948 Wish I could help more! |

Re: Any ideas on my charging issue?
Thanks for the information. The bench testing was going off the service manual. Checking the voltages was done on the buggy. I just hate to call it dead and find out it is something else but there isn't much else to that could be bad. I mean the voltage regulator might be bad but when I grounded out the DF terminal that bypasses that. It sucks because the SG looks pretty new.

Re: Any ideas on my charging issue?
Well... I read my manual for the test procedure for the generator function, and... you did it right!
Out of the bad S/G's that I've experienced at my campground, only one had bad brushes, the others were either fried, or had bad bearings, and just a rebuild costs as much as a new aftermarket S/G. Sorry... I don't know what else to tell ya'! |

Re: Any ideas on my charging issue?
One thought here! Are you using a fully charged battery to test? It would take quite a while for the generator to bring up the voltage on a discharged battery.

Re: Any ideas on my charging issue?
I got like 12.5 on the battery. I am only getting 2 volts on the generator side of the diode.
I am leaning towards something bad in the generator. I will mess with it a little more this weekend. |

Re: Any ideas on my charging issue?
Note: the only diode I saw in any of my diagrams was the diode across the small posts of the solenoid!
Do you have something different? |

Re: Any ideas on my charging issue?
There is a large diode across the big posts that allows the current from the generator to bypass the start solenoid and charge the battery. It is the box mounted on the frame with the red and white heavy gauge wire.
The small diode is for when you de-energize the solenoid and the magnetic field collapses and sends an inductive kick back through the coil circuit. The diode lets it just spin around and dissipate and not hurt anything. |
