Default Is my club car supposed to do this?

I sold my 96 club car and got a 97 just like it, and when I take my foot off the gas, the engine stays running? The 97 was "custom wired". I took the dash apart and I see just trailer wire with masking tape and #'s hand written on it. (Picture at end)

On my old one, the engine would completely stop when I removed my foot from the gas at a stop light and only start when you pressed on the gas pedal.

And when the key is NOT in the cart, if I put it in neutral, the engine starts idling very low??

It was extremely slow, so I lengthened the accelerator rod, and now it makes an issue obvious when shifting from reverse to forward because the engine is always running, except now it's running at higher RPMs and grinds a bit going in/out of gear.

So to go from forward to reverse, I turn the key off, then change, then key on.

Here is what the wiring looks like: http://imgur.com/a/f0vEB

Atrain... is this a "key start" cart?
Does the key switch have off/on/start positions?, or is it just off/on?
The reason I ask is the wire colors, Green, yellow, and blue on the one switch lug tells me it's a "key start" cart!

Also... Shorten the accelerator rod back to where it was! We'll get to speeding it up later!

It has a key to start it just like my old one, but it's not a golf cart key, it's a small GM key and it looks like the whole key cylinder was replaced when somebody lost it or something.

It acts very strange too, like I can turn it to the "on" position and drive it, but then sometimes I need to turn it and hold it to what would be the equivalent of the "start" on a real car and turn it over.

We're getting somewhere now!

Key start carts are "few and far between" around here! most people here have "pedal start" carts.
Your going to need to state that every time you post, so we know how to help!
(as for your 96... I/we didn't know that it was a key start cart also!)

The small GM key may just be a "keyed different" key switch... I have one in my cart! (mine's a "pedal start" cart though!)
Just by the looks of your pic, it's an OEM Club Car key switch!

As for it running/starting in neutral, or starting without turning the key to start,
the first thing I'd look at is the relay in the Electrical Components Box, (black box directly below the drivers seat/butt)
and check to see if that's wired correctly!

Just by the looks of your pic, it's an OEM CC key switch!

I MADE A VIDEO!!

And the 96/97 were basically identical. Was this re-wired to be a key start with the aftermarket key/cylinder? If it was a pedal start, then that'd solve the issue I think. I can shift in/out of forward/reverse easily when the engine is off obviously.

MG97XX-XXXXXX = 1997 Resort Villager gas 8 passenger

Check the back of the forward/reverse shifter and see if there's a grey or tan wire disconnected from a micro switch,
that may be causing the cart to start in neutral!
