Default Gas Club car 1998

When going down a steep hill, I apply foot to brake, when I reapply my foot to the accelerator it backfires. I have also had 3 coils replaced in less that 20 hours of use. Could the backfiring be causing the coils to go bad? What causes the backfire in the first place?
