Default 1999 Gas Club Cart

I need help with a cart that clutch does not stop or engage right. I sometimes can tap the gas pedal and it will start at once and again I will have to pump it several times. If if does not engage right the belt is heard slipping. I have already replace the drive belt. What next. Do I need to rework the clutch or buy a new one.

Maybe the starter generator belt is slipping, not drive belt. Just a thought

I replaced it with a new belt and a new start generator. This was a used cart I bought that was supposed to be in excellent condition, you know how that goes. Some people you can trust and others you can't. I tried to play a round of golf and had to load it on trailer after 14 holes. What's crazy is sometimes it stops perfect and you hit the pedal and it starts first tap.

Did you get the starter belt tight? Maybe you can take seat off and watch it when it's not starting.

Yes belts are tight , the clutch does not seem to engage right or it does not stop in right place to allow gas pedal to start engine. The engine runs fine after it starts. I'm not that familiar with the clutch/gas operation. I have had electric carts in past and this is my first gas cart. I have even replaced the carb. to make sure the gas flow was good.

Welcome to BGW llc77!

First things first... get your mind off of the drive clutch, it has nothing to do with starting the engine!

What's happening with yours is, the engine shuts down and stops at the "compression stage", (common with most gas Club Cars)
and the starter strains at start up to push it beyond that point! so... it's the tightness of the starter/generator belt!

In your first post you said "if it does not engage right, the belt is heard slipping",
that tells me (and Bill) that the S/G belt may be too loose!

Most say that you should tighten the S/G belt as tight as you can, and again... I disagree!
there IS a "sweet spot" for tightening the S/G belt on Club Cars,
if it's too tight, it will do the same thing but, without slipping/squealing,
if it's too loose... same thing but, with slipping/squealing!

Once you've experimented a few times with how tight, or how loose you can make the S/G belt,
you'll find the "sweet spot" and it'll turnover and start every single time!

Thanks Lockman 1 as I really appreciate your answering my call for help. I will try to find the sweet spot but right now it is coming a monsoon rain storm in West Tennessee about 5 inches today so far. I will try this tomorrow. Thanks:

Agree 100% with Lockman1! Very common issue. I have a 93 that does this constantly. Push the accelerator and wait about 1 second and it will turn over. I've yet to find the "sweet spot", but she does fine...

Lockman 1, Found the start generator belt had slipped out of the pulley but when I put it back on it will not try to start. The belt stays still while the start generator belt pulley turns. Do you think when the belt jumped off the bottom pulley it might have stretched it too much to work. I tried to adjust it a few times but it will not try to start. Just spinning the start generator pulley. I'm not familiar with the compression state but I don't think if the belt won't turn it will ever start. I have heard that some generic belts don't work as good as a club cart belt, is this true or bull. I appreciate you two trying to help old Tennessee hillbilly.

Use a club car belt. I have had problems with different types of belts before. If it still happens with the club car belt then your not getting it tight enough.
