Default Securing Your Cart?

I decided that while I am being hopeful for a helpful response on my ignition wiring question I posted yesterday I would throw another one out to the group.

For those of you who take your carts with you to campgrounds or down to the beach to get around... How do you secure them, knowing that the keys are pretty much universal??

I see all these carts parked down by the beach that folks use to cart themselves and their stuff down, and we plan to do the same thing, but it just concerns me.

Same with campgrounds. And i don't think the theft piece worries me too much, if someone wants to steal one, no matter what you do, it's gone. I think what worries me is the teenage kid who has a key and decides to take it for a joy ride. So my cart ends up 2 miles down the beach and down in the woods at some campground.

I bought a steering wheel to peddle "Club" which due to the brake pedal design of our carts really isn't that affective, more of a visual deterent. And then of course I am attempting a swith change, but with my wiring issues (http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-c...ssistance.html) I am not sure that is going to actually happen.

So...what do you do, or have you seen that might be effective?

If This was my cart I would keep the original key switch and install a simple toggle switch somewhere hidden that interrupts the power going from the key. the best way is to use the power wire behind the key this way someone cant just lift the seat and see what is going on. That's just me though.

I saw a guy on here that used a cig lighter as a kill switch. It was pretty cool push the lighter in and it makes contact to allow the cart to run take the lighter out and it breaks the contact and won't move. how many people are gonna have a cig lighter in there pocket.

I replaced my ignition.. And my old club car branded key no longer works in it. It came with two new ones. But is otherwise a direct replacement.

When I leave it for the week I just run a chain around the back seat tubes.

Capt.Jack good idea about the toggle, funny, last night when rewiring the original switch back up I was thinking of that exact same thing. Went out this morning and picked up a toggle that I can hide up in the "glove box" area, out of sight, and will be easy to trip without anyone seeing or realizing.

That with the club should work enough to deter. Again, if someone really wants it, they will get it. This just deals with kids and pranksters.

Thanks for the replies!

Keep any other cool ideas coming!

You never said what cart you have?

if your cart has a TOW/RUN switch, you may need to switch the cart to TOW before you flip the new kill switch

All I do when I'm leaving my cart somewhere out of sight at the campground is simply put it in maintenance mode. Most people have no idea what it is much less how to switch it back. In maintenance mode the motor will only run with the transmission in neutral.

DS, early 90s, converted carry all into 4 seater.

New toggle works great.
