Default timing off? FE290 wont start

My friend has a 96 ds and it wasn't running real great from what I heard and now won't run at all. Just popping out the carb. I'm assuming the timing is off and if so how can we check it? I though the fan and cover needed to be removed to check. And if it is off, then what? I've seen theres no chain in these, just gears. Does that mean major tear down? Thanks for the help.....as always!

For starters... bring the piston to TDC, then pull the valve cover to see if both valves are closed!
if not... excessive carbon build up on the head or valves could be holding the intake valve open,
just something easy to check before a complete tear down.

It sounds like a problem with the valves. I would set it tdc and set them at .005 lash. They do get out of adjustment witch will cause it to pop back though the carb.

Yeah that was the first thing I tried, actually my friend tried it, but he jacked it all up. I dont think he put the engine to tdc, so I fixed that and it still wont start and pops.

Yeah there is, and it's a possibility! (but, I've only heard of that happening twice in 10 years.)

I had an old motor that was seized that I got with a carryall I bought this spring. Its been sitting under my work bench and I thought it would be a great time to tear into it and see what these engines are all about. Besides the fan keyway breaking, about the only other way I can see a timing issue is if the composite gear on the cam gets effed up. There's no chain or tensioner. Its just gear on gear. If the fan keyway is okay, rather than pulling the motor to open up the crankshaft cover, I think I'll pull the head to see if there is a valve issue. Either way, I think my friend is screwed.
