Default Battery and ignition issue

Hi , thanks for taking a look see at my post. I have two issues. First of all, I have a 96 gas club car. The first issue has been occurring for as long as I can remember. From a stop, when I press the gas pedal, I get no response, until I release the pedal and slowly press it again, looking for that 'sweet spot', from which it then runs fine. Until I start again from a stop.
Second issue is new today. Pressed the pedal, nothing. Wont even turn over. Lifted the seat, smelled a hot 'melting' smell. Could see a small wisp of smoke from battery area. Felt the cables, checking for tightness, they seemed tight, but the positive cable was HOT, almost burning my hand. My cart will not run at all now.
Anyone have a clue for either?

If the positive battery cable was that hot something was drawing a whole bunch of juice. Would think the starter would be the main culprit. Maybe remove the belts and see if the starter turns easier by itself if at all.

I bet you have corrosion inside your battery cable. I just bought both at Napa for 10.00. I'd definitly change out the Pos. one.

Took the battery in to test it and sure enough it was bad. Also bought a new positive cable. Installed both and so far so good.
