Default I don't know where to start looking

'97 Club Car Carryall II

In the past when going down my drive which is quite steep I apply a bit of gas peddle to keep the engine running and let the compression help to slow down the cart, and this helped somewhat but usually I still needed to apply brakes to maintain control.

But now when driving down I apply a bit of gas peddle as before and I get a lot of slowing but the engine is not running at all and, in fact, I need to come to a complete stop before I can restart the engine. And, it is not a quick restart as I would normally expect.

Here's what I've changed since it was working properly: I have installed a steel Curtis Cab, a new drive (Factory) drive belt, and washed the cart and cab getting over spray on the engine.

There's obviously a problem and I don't know where to start looking. Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i bet its the curtis cab. your going to have to pull it off and sell it to me!
t
he washing probably didn't do anything to it. i have power washed one inside and out numerous times, only thing is starting is a bit wonky at first tip the belt gets dried out.
pull the plug nd verify its dry and not all oily, if it is, put it in service/maitance made and see if it will run and start that way. there should be no reason why it has to be at a stop to restart. the genny/starter is the same unit, low rom its a starter, high rpms, its a genny.

might also want to check you brushes on your starter. on the opposite side of the pulley, theres 2 or 4 black rubber covers, pop them off and look in the holes, see how much the brushes are left. if there all the way to the armature, there gone, if there alt he way to the back, there newer. i wonder if this is the reason, since you use you engine as a brake, and then turning the starter/genny to a dynobrake.

Thanks for your suggestions. I did pull the plug - not oily, in fact it clean with a white cast.

Looked at the carb and found that it was not opening fully with the pedal fully depressed. I also discovered that the air inlet tube from the choke was very soft on the bottom side at the carb. Pulled the hose off and found that I had raw gasoline laying on the bottom of the air inlet chamber. Apparently raw fuel was leaking into the air inlet tube and had deteriorated the rubber causing the soft spot.

I'm not sure what is causing my carb problem but I obviously have carb and governor problems so that's where I'm going to start.

If I can't fix the problems and find that the problem is the Curtis Cab I'll let you know ckiguy.

Try some WD-40 or Silicone spray on the plug-wire and boot.It could be wet,Every cart is different, one can get drowned and be fine, while another doesn't accept moisture well.If its' cranking but not starting, its' fuel or ignition-related,since the starter is working, that would rule out the brushes.Check for spark(no spark, and wet plug-clean/replace plug and recheck, plug is dry, start with drying the engine electricals, then recheck,if still no spark, start checking the ignition system control and wiring. If spark is good, and the plug is dry, check the fuel-system.Any leaks/cracks can cause the system to take in air,and lose prime,and/or not draw fuel.Pull the line off the carb, and hold it into a pop-bottle,step on peddle and check for fuel-flow.If its good, remove and clean the carb,if not, remove and clean/rebuild fuel-pump.Hope this helps.
