83 Columbia D3 Fuel Pump Setup
I have a 1983 Columbia model D3 with a 2 stroke engine. I think its a Harley engine. It doesn't run at this point and needs work. I plan on rebuilding the engine, carburetor and fuel pump at the very least.
It has a Walbro carb (WHL 11 1295) with the rectangular fuel pump on the side of it. Just looking at it I don't care much for the way its engineered. The fuel pump appears to be pressed into the carburetor and the fuel inlet line to the pump also appears to be pressed into the pump. The fuel inlet line is disconnected and was already disconnected when I got it. I just have to imagine these are prone to leaks at these connections or bad about fitting correctly when removed or something is not going to go right when I go to putting things back. Anyone have any info or ideas about what I need to do before I start working on the pump and carb? Maybe change to a different carb and pump? I'd hate to put money into something that isn't going to pan out when done. Thanks. Last edited by backyard; 06-26-2015 at 10:28 PM.. Reason: added info |

Re: 83 Columbia D3 Fuel Pump Setup
Any 3 line vaccum pump will work on that and you can position it pretty much anywhere you want. You can covert to a low psi electric pump too. You have options. That cart will accept a Mikuni carb too, same as the 80s EZ Gos so you can have options there too. I did this to my carts. Works great.

Re: 83 Columbia D3 Fuel Pump Setup
Thanks.
The connector on the fuel pump inlet seems to have pulled off at some point. The connector is still in the fuel hose. I think I will try JB Welding it back on and rebuilding the pump and carb. Since I don't know what all works and what don't on the cart I will go the cheapest route for now. I found a pic on the internet that shows the pump outlet having threads so I guess the pump threads onto the carb. You have to remove the air box hose adapter and choke shaft to get enough room for the pump to turn off. I think I may have other problems though as I'm not sure if all the parts are original and may have come off something else. I will start another thread. |

Re: 83 Columbia D3 Fuel Pump Setup
The Walbro and Tillotson carburetors and fuel pumps have been used on small engines for several years. They work and work well for the intended use. They are not racing carburetors or for high speed use. Parts can be found at most lawnmower repair shops or online. Just put them in reasonable working order and they are very reliable.

I have never heard of a fuel pump being threaded onto the carb. Is everything you have stock?

Re: 83 Columbia D3 Fuel Pump Setup
I have seem Walbro carbs that had part of the fuel pump cast into the side of the carb body, later 80's seems about right so it must have been a thing in that era.

Re: 83 Columbia D3 Fuel Pump Setup
Unfortuneately I don't know if its the original engine or if some of the parts are original or what. I have another thread about this and I would like to know so I can get a book and buy the right parts. I don't know much about these carts. I don't believe the carb is original to the year of the cart so maybe the whole engine isn't.
The pump is a Walbro Autopulse 3034 and here is the pic I saw. http://img0123.popscreencdn.com/1826...pulse-fuel.jpg The pump isn't really cast into the carb but it is right beside the carb and the threads in the pic are right into the side of the carb. I can turn the pump clockwise and it will tighten up and I can only turn the pump so far counterclockwise before it hits the throttle shaft and won't turn any further so I assume it's threaded but really don't know for sure. If it isn't threaded how would it come off? I tried to prise it somewhat with a srewdriver to get it off and it didn't budge but I didn't put a ton of force on it. |

Re: 83 Columbia D3 Fuel Pump Setup
It does screw off. It was not intended to come off without a complete disassemble of the carb. Most rebuild the pump with a repair kit. If it is not repairable there are other options like a new pump and carb. I would remove the throttle shaft, remove the pump, install a threaded nipple where the pump was and adapt another pump.

Re: 83 Columbia D3 Fuel Pump Setup
The threaded fuel pump nipple is the fuel inlet to the carb (I Think).

Re: 83 Columbia D3 Fuel Pump Setup
Yea there are kits to rebuild the carb and pump and thats what I probably will do. I did run upon where I saw the model years for the WHL 11 carb.
http://www.vintagegolfcartparts.com/...dson_fuel&cat= 1987 - 1995 models had the WHL 11 carbs. It is probably somewhere closer to 1995. |
