Default 1990 ParCar no start

This is my first post....I volunteered to try and get a cart working for the local Rona who want to use it in the local santa claus parades and events. NOt sure what I got myself into here.

Anyway, I have a no-start condition with the 1990 Par Car.

Here is what I have so far:
-compression 100, forward and 80, reverse
-I have confirmed spark and when I put a bit of fuel down the cylinder it will run
-I disconnected the fuel line at the filter and saw whatever gas left in the clear line was sucked into the pump, however when I reconnect the fuel line does not refill.
-vacuum gauge hooked up to fuel line (suction side of pump) has no deflection during cranking
-vacuum gauge hooked up to hose from crankcase deflects...in both directions
-gas in a funnel on the suction side of the pump does not get sucked into the pump

I'm assuming I should try to rebuild the pump first? The carb should probably be cleaned as well I guess.

I would check the fuel pump and what drives it then go to the carb.

Thank you for your response tew45, it is greatly appreciated.

I ordered a rebuild kit for the pump which may be here by Friday. I'm hoping it is only that, as I believe bad seals can create this symptom.

I could very well be wrong but I like to try the simple things first! If you get some vacuum pulse from the crank case the pump should work. Also try priming the pump.

There was definitely a pulse on the crankcase.....not nearly as much vacuum as pressure though. The gauge barely deflected to the negative.

I should have tried more as far as priming the pump is concerned. Having a funnel on the end of a short hose and pouring a bit of the gas mix wasn't successful. a little amount went down the hose, but nothing would come out of the pressure side while cranking.

I'll see what happens when the pump kit is installed and go from there. Fortunately there are a couple of local (20 to 30 minutes away) places that I can get parts from without having to wait for mail/courier.

Thanks again tew45.

You can try an electric pump too. It's a pretty easy fix in a lot of these cases.

Sounds like a good way to go Lochlin. I am sure I could do a search here and find everything I may need to know.... I'll try rebuilding the pump first and see what happens.

I do have a question about the fuel pump though. I have seen rebuild kits online and they seem to come with a couple of spring....at least it looks like a couple of springs. I took apart the one from this cart, and it only had a couple of gaskets and the clear gasket/membrane/diaphragm....whatever one wants to call it. Perhaps some pumps came with springs while others didn't? This is a 1990 cart, so who knows if the pump had been torn down before or is a replacement. Something has been changed on it, as there was a hold drilled in a bracket to mount the pump which did not look like it was done at the factory.

The pump has a spring or two to work internal flap valves which are part of the gasket. Put it together like the diagram illustrates and it should work. It may need a little priming first. I have used an outboard motor tank priming bulb to prime my cart when needed. Usually not needed unless lines and pump are dry.

Interesting.....no springs in this pump. It does make sense, but they must be very thin gage as we are dealing with quite low pressure/vacuum.

Thanks again tew45!

I checked the manual and found that they used 2 types of fuel pump. A rectangular pump that you find on many riding lawn mowers and a square pump (probably also used on lawn mowers). The rectangular pump has 2 springs in it and the square pump doesn't seem to have any. Check the manual for a diagram and instructions.
