Default Drive belt hooked up, now cart very hard to move

I've got the engine in and the clutch hooked up to the flywheel via the belt and now the cart won't move. Pushing it hard as you can just barely moves the cart. The cart moves easily without the engine and belt so its not a rear end issue. Engine turns over by hand just fine. Am I missing something?

Is the belt and clutch supposed to freewheel at low speeds and mine does not?
Does the rear end go in nuetral or something?

I amfraid I'm not fully aware of these carts work just yet.

When you say your cart doesn't move do you mean that it doesn't start at all? Or do you mean that the cart starts but it seems as if something is preventing it from moving as if the brake is being held down?

Regarding the belt and clutches, you should be able to push the cart with the belt on you should definitely notice the drag though. It should be a good bit tougher to push with the belt on (which is why a lot of guys spin the belt off when pushing as it's easier). That said, one person should be able to push the cart.

At rest, there should be a bit a play in the belt. You should be able to turn it around the clutch axles by hand without the clutches moving. If your belt is the wrong one, ie too short, the cart will be tough to move. Could be that your engine is spaced wrong too via the motor mounts and it's the clutches are too far apart.

I am just brainstorming here to get some conversation going.

If you got an 82+ they really don't move with the belt on and engine not turning. The 81-'s sort of will move. The 81-'s have a bearing at the bottom of the drive clutch that the belt can ride on so that helps it to slip a bit when needed. The comet clutch used on the 82+ didn't have that so the belt really never slacks enough to slip well.

Im just getting the engine and stuff back in the cart and hooked back up. I never saw the cart in one piece. When I got the cart it was in 100 pieces so that is making things more difficult to diagnose problems with it.

I can move the cart but I have to put everything I have into it and I'm pretty strong. Two people can move it at about 1/2 strength. Thats the only way I know how to describe it.

I see there is supposed to be a bearing in the middle of the clutch flanges that spins therefore lowering friction and allowing the belt to slip around the clutch when at rest or idle as long as the side of the belt isn't dragging on the side flanges. I think this may be the problem I'm having because I dont think mine moves. The belt is old and I couldn't tell you if it is the correct belt but it seems to fit right.

Also either someone took the screws out of the clutch cover and spot welded the cover back on or I have an aftermarket clutch. The picture of the clutch in the manual looks like mine but I can't get the cover off without grinding off the spot welds. Are there any side effects to not having a cover on the clutch in case I can't get the cover back on?

So your saying the Comet clutch doesn't have the bearing in the middle for the belt to ride on?

Was the Comet clutch the one that came from the factory or something you bought aftermarket when the factory clutch tore up?

No bearings on the Comet. Comets were factory too. Both of my "modern" carts are 85s and have them. Again, I can push my carts with the belts on. It takes a bit of effort but it is a one guy job.

I had to spot weld one of the covers on too. I had to pull the clutch to replace a crank seal and all of the cover bolts were frozen and stripped out. I had to drill them out and spot weld the cover back on when done.

I believe the covers are needed to prevent dust / dirt from gumming up the weights inside but thats just my guess.

I don't have chapter 8 of the manual. The 82 cart times different with different point setting and advance from my older carts. I don't know why. Maybe another forum member can explain the difference

Thanks guys. I took the engine back off and was looking closely at the clutch and looks like there is no bearing. The cart hasn't ran in years and maybe when I get it running something will loosen up. I did use some very find sandpaper to clean off the oxidation on the flanges and that did help some.

Looks like they would want to put bearings in them so the cart was easier to move around. I'm sure if it had a bearing it would move easy, but I've been wrong before.

My old carts have clutch bearings and the only time I can move them easily is when the belt is worn out.

What does one usually do if it breaks down somewhere and can't push it?

How hard is it to just pull the belt off and put it back? I had a good time canting the engine over while mounts where loose. Not too bad though. I suppose you could pull the spark plug and hand turn the clutch.
