Par car lacking speed
I have a question regarding a 91 par car that is lacking either power or speed. A little about the cart, had new top end put on piston etc, removed oil injection, new drive belt, new fuel filter n check valve in tank with grommets. It seems everything I've done the cart is getting slower by the day, when I say slow it's about 7 or 8 mph. I haven't done seals, the guy who put top end on is a reputable motorcycle mechanic and said the compression was over 100. I would like to see a 20 mph cart and it seems I'm going backwards. Today I jacked the rearend up n watched the pulleys, the belt which is new doesn't seem to slide up with pedal mashed like it should. It almost seems like there's not enough power there. I'm at a standstill here any ideas from you guys? Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Par car lacking speed
Couple of things:
You could well have a fuel issue. Not enough gas = loss of power. Bad seals will cause this problem. Compression is not affected by bad seals so, even though your compression is good, the seals can be bad. You may want to replace those seals. If the seals aren't super bad an electric fuel pump may do the trick. When you say pulleys you are probably talking about the clutches. When you are watching the action of the clutches pay particular attention to the "secondary" clutch. This would be the one that is connected to the rear end and not the engine. The belt should move toward and almost touch the center of this clutch. If this clutch is bad it will hold the rest of the cart back. Here is a video of how the clutches should look when working right: http://s1105.photobucket.com/user/BR...c3300.mp4.html You probably have an issue with one of these things. Fuel issue are a lot less expensive than a clutch so you may want to start there? |

Thanks for the reply Lochlin, I will try to do some more investigating today and try to snap a pic of sec clutch in action to see how it compares?

Re: Par car lacking speed
So here's an update since last post as well as another question/problem! I had the motor rebuilt, new seals and gaskets, bearings, top end etc... After putting engine back in I installed an electric fuel pump and now it won't run without choking it pry half? I tried teeing line back to tank and removed the check valve in tank with no results! The fuel pump is a 1.5 to 3 or 4 psi Holley. Am I a screwing up my air to fuel ratio with too much fuel or what am I missing? Also I did plug compression line that ran mechanical pump.. Thanks for any help.

Re: Par car lacking speed
You should be in good shape with that fuel pump and your right about plugging the line.
Did you do anything to the carb? Clean, rebuild, nothing? Sounds like the carb to me. Sometimes they get so gummed up you can't get them clean. What carb do you have? Make sure you don't have any air leaks in the fuel line/system which should be visible by leaking fuel. |
