Re: 94 par car timing issue
Is it backfiring out of the intake or exhaust?
Try taking the muffler off and see if it improves or worsens. |

Re: 94 par car timing issue
ok I'll try that.
When I got the cart it was backfiring and the guy I got it from said he thought it was because he couldn't seen to get the timing right. I've removed the conversion plate he installed as is was very difficult to move and cleaned up the points installation as he had it crooked and at an angle since the screw he was using hold down the points was too long and digging into the base not allowing the conversion plate to sit flat. Filled a small amount off the out side of the conversion plate so it could be moved/turned when installed now it appears to be a better install but no change in the backfiring/missing at all speeds. Forward/ reverse does not seem to be much different.. Just starting to do the work, I've worked on cars my whole life and built a few hot rods but never had a miss like this. If seems as thought it is out of time. Kind of like when your timing chain gets to long and throws the timing off a little. That is why I'm considering going to the HEI conversion. or maybe just get one of the electronic modules made for this machine. Checking local prices for the conversion and the $120 module the difference is only about $50 dollars as I will need a new coil anyway and high resistance coils are about $47 to $50 locally. |

20160908_211122 (1).jpg These as a couple of shots of the conversion plate and the base it sits on. You can see on the base where it was digging in to the base holding up that side of the plate not allowing you to completely snug down the conversion plate. After this pics I did have to remove the washers and put in a smaller/shorter screw as the washers did not allow enought adjustment of the points. I've set them at .016 for now. Re: 94 par car timing issue
I swear it, I have an '85 that simply can't be timed with points. I know it's not logical and I don't know the reasoning. I have successfully timed other carts.
Just two weeks ago, I was having a conversation with my neighbor about this one cart being "untimeable". He is extremely mechanical and restores old motors as a hobby. He laughed at me and said everything can be timed. Well, we popped my cart open, popped the module out, slapped the points in and I watched him get at it. Two hours later he admitted that I was right. Cart runs flawless with the module. |

Re: 94 par car timing issue
got my Electronic Module today installed it in a few minutes man what a difference
runs real smooth starts and doesn't have a Miss that's a big improvement over where it was went ahead and bought the electronic module becsuse after pricing all the part to make t the HEI conversion on it was over half what it cost for a new module was built for it so it makes it run so much better |

Re: 94 par car timing issue
Do yourself a favor and make sure you have good coil resistance or you'll burn out that module! A lot of us have made that mistake.
You need to have right around 4 ohms. A simple measurement across the coil's terminals will give your resistance. If you have less than 4 ohms then make sure you get a ballast resistor and wire it in like in the attached pic. Remember, resistance gets added together so if your coil shows 2 ohms then add a 2 ohm ballast resistor for a total of 4 ohms. If you coil has no resistance then it's from a car. Get an internally resisted coil and/or add a couple of ballast resistors until you get around 4 ohms. |

Re: 94 par car timing issue
Thank you , I've followed you alls advice and put a coil with 2.2 ohms and a ballast resistor at 2.2 wired as per the diagram . the Electronic Module took care of 90% of my missing problems and its really running pretty well right now. The only thing now it's either 3000 rpm or it's nothing. I've took carb off ordered rebuild kit and waiting for it to arrive. Soaked carb for twenty hours came out pretty clean.
