Default 89 ParCar G4S bogging, runs on choke

Hi Guys,

Newbie here, but I kinda know my way around some things, but this golf cart is giving me greif and the wife is breathing down my neck to get it going at the campsite lol.

I recently bought a 89 ParCar G4S (VIN 5K 20257C9) and it was backfiring when letting off the throttle. I managed to get that fixed by adjusting the throttle linkage. It ran fine for a little bit but then I took it for a spin and it would lose power on me and just kinda sit there and idle / bog, even if I had the throttle pushed to the floor. If I pulled the choke, it would eventually regain its power. I figured it was the carb that needed cleaning and I read in this forum that it's suggested to swap out the stock carb for a mikuni - which I did - but still no change. I've tried to adjust the carb. I have the screw out 1/4 turn and it runs better, but will bog and I need to pull the choke to get it to come back again.

I thought maybe it's not getting enough gas, but the new mikuni carb has an overflow hose and I get quite a bit ofgas coming out of it, so I figure that's not the problem? Could it be a leak between the carb and the block? I didn't change a gasket, didn't really see one except for a big plastic spacer.

Any suggestions on what to try next? Is it normal for quite a bit of gas to come out of that new carb's hose like that? Should I clean and put the stock carb back on and try to get it to work?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Almost certainly you need some crank seals. The overflow from your new carb is a dead give away.

Gas gets to from the tank to the carb by way of the fuel pump. Obviously, you are good there. Gas gets from the carb to the cylinder by way of engine vacuum. This is where it seems you are failing. Leaky cranks seals are, by far, the most common cause of leaky crank seals. Those actually aren't too bad to change on the 89s. Do some forum searches as those have been talked about a lot.

Sidebar here, what did you adjust on the linkage to fix the backfire, mine does that when letting off the throttle a lot and it is driving my wife nuts.

The first thing to consider when fixing the dreaded HD / Columbia backfire is what causes it. Backfire is caused a cart's ignition (spark) stopping before the flow of fuel into the cylinder stops. This loads up the cylinder with fuel and when spark starts again the big bang happens. Four things will normally fix a backfire:

1) There is a little round disc attached to the accelerator linkage under the driver's side floor. This disc controls when ignition starts / stops. It can be adjusted out so that ignition starts earlier / stays on longer with the push of the accelerator pedal so that any fuel entering the cylinder is burnt and not "stored".

2) The accelerator cable needs to be adjusted so that the fuel butterfly fully closes when the accelerator is not being depressed. A properly lubricated and adjusted cable is a must. Old and slow closing throttle cables will cause backfires. The throttle butterfly must snap closed with the pedal.

3) Proper timing. If your cart is electronic ignition then this isn't a giant concern but if it is running points it's a huge concern. If proper timing (spark) isn't delivered then the spark will miss the fuel on a rotation or two.

4) Better driving. 2 cycle motor should be driven a bit differently then 4 strokes. With cars, we are comfortable easing off the gas but still staying on it when a coming to a stop. Two cycle carts can be different. While coming to a stop, if you keep on the gas a bit there is a chance you will deactivate the spark (via the disc in point 1) but still allow fuel to enter the cylinder via the accelerator not being closed. To remedy, in your cart when coming to a stop immediately get off the gas completely and coast to your stop rather than easing off the accelerator into it.

The attached service supplement speaks to backfire prevention.

Thanks Lochlin. I will check my cable adjustment/timing but I'm betting it's related to timing as I switched this cart over from electronic to points when the module quit on me so...#1 hopefully will solve it for me. It runs really good with the timing I have so I don't think its the physical timing plate position that is causing it but who knows.

I was told by the guy who sold it to me that the seals were done. Why would leaky seals cause the carb to overflow? I was under the impression that the cheap chinese knock off carb's float needle seat is garbage since I tried to adjust the float height to no avail. Anyways, the knock off mikuni wasn't cutting it, so I put the old walbro back on after a good cleaning.

The cart is running, but now I need to play with the throttle linkages, springs, etc... What other symptoms would I be experiencing if it was the seals?

For me the crank seals meant I wasn't getting enough vacuum to run the fuel pump, so I don't think the carb would have too much fuel and be overflowing. Needles and seats can be a ****** sometimes, I've had them take a lot of cleaning and playing to get them to seal up right on some carbs for motorcycles so I'd start there.

The fuel pump is definitely working. Like i said, i put the original carb back on and it runs now, but i need to adjust the gas pedal. When i press the pedal, the carb butterfly doesn't open. I shortened the spring that pulls back the butterfly, it opens now but way too much.

Can someone take pictures of a stock carb setup, linkages especially, and springs? Or point me to a post with pics? It should be fine if it was hooked back up stock, but that doesn't seem to want to open the throttle right now.

I removed the oil pump cable and mixed the gas and removed the governor cable to remove any other resistance

Well, I brought the cart back home and was determined to get the mikuni chinese clone working. Looks like the fuel pump was pumping way to much pressure for the needle and seat, so I plumbed up a T and brought a line back to the tank. Wow! Purrs like a kitten! I am getting a bit of gas spitting out of the carb towards the air filter, so that might be a seals / reed valve issue I believe, but it's just to say a slight mist, so I'll leave it alone for now... Now to jimmy rig the choke and the air filter back on for a real test drive.
