Default Severe Backfire

Ok.. I have an older Columbia... engine just rebuilt.. runs super but will severely backfire... I redid all the throttle linkage... took off carburetor... cleaned .. new throttle spring... throttle opens and closes as if new...

When I operate cart... it goes great.... when I decelerate I have to let it slow to a stop before I touch the accelerator again... if I drive along and let off the gas and then try to accelerate again... BANG!!! shotgun BANG!!/// I jacked her up and rev her up .. revs up and down fine but if I touch gas while it's decelerating BANG!.. the fire is coming out of the exhaust pipe..

Engine has new crank seals.. I did the throttle cable at the pedal too... throttle closes very well when gas pedal is released... but soon as you touch the pedal and open the throttle a tad... BANG... tried turning idle screw in and out ..no difference.. At a loss what to try next... I have another PAR CAR.. same engine... but no BANG...

Could it be something else???

2 things come to mind, valve adjustment and timing.

Check the timing.

Also check how to see when the micro switch is closes. should be closed when you hit the gas

Jeggers is right. If it runs very good forward and backward then the micro switch needs adjustment or replacing.
