starter solenoid
is there anyway to check a starter solenoid?

Yes, Put 12 volts on the small terminals and listen for it to work. If the solenoid actuates, see if it passes 12 volts through the large terminals. If you still have doubts, go to the closest auto supply store and buy a 4 terminal continuous duty solenoid and replace it.
