Default Drive Belt Install

Hi All, new here,
found a 1987 Par Car in a shed (for many years) and took it on as a project.
Man, are we having fun with it!

Cleaned it up. Replaced all fuel and oil lines. Rebuilt carb. New battery. New fuel pump. Got it started! Drove it around some. Adjusted as needed. Then the drive belt exploded!

Got one on order. How do you replace the drive belt. AND is there any reason, other than it sitting for years, why the drive belt would explode?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.
