1988 Par Car Metallic "Clanging"
I just bought a 1988 4 wheel gas Par Car. It is in pretty good shape mechanically (or so I thought). After it sat in the garage for a week, I turn the key and depress the gas pedal.....nothing. I charge the battery 100% and try again. This time it sounds as though it is "idling", which I have learned is actually just the starter turning the engine with no spark.
I get it to start finally, and it seems to backfire a lot. Then the thing dies completely. The last time I started it, it would run, but it sounded a bit metallic. I have not run it since for fear of causing damage. Has anuone had this problem or these goofy "clanging" noises? Could it not be lubricating the engine properly? Any help would be appreciated. I realize that a single piston two stroke engine is pretty simple, but I am a novice and could use some help. |

Re: 1988 Par Car Metallic "Clanging"
Could be several things. Clanging might be clutch (primary). No starting also could be several things: Check valve in fuel tank, Poor fuel delivery (not enough or too much). Bad spark plug, or ?. A metallic sound may be normal or a disaster.

Re: 1988 Par Car Metallic "Clanging"
Well, I did notice that the bolt that holds the large clutch "wheel" appears to be loose. Not knowing if this is normally supposed to be like that or not
I left if alone. Is this bolt supposed to be completely tightened? Is there a torque setting? And finally, are you supposed to use loc-tite? Any insight would be great. I downloaded the service manuals, etc from one of the other threads, but the info on the engine and the transmission are not very detailed. If anyone has a better manual that describes the engine and trans, I would be in your debt! |

Look on page 4-4 of your manual and see if the "large bolt" is shone there. If you are talking about the center nut (#7) it is supposed to be tight and locked by a bendable lock washer (#. And hope the shaft it fits on is not damaged. Inspect it and the key and key way to be sure.

Re: 1988 Par Car Metallic "Clanging"
Well, that did it. Thank you for the response! After tightening down the main shaft bolt, the noise went away and it appears to be no worse for the wear. The belt got a bit worn, but it beats having something major to wrong.
This particar model has the automatic oiler. Do you know what type of oil is to be used? |

Be sure the bolt has it's lock washer or it might come loose again. Any good 2 cycle oil will do. I use wal-mart's oil by the gallon.
