Default What the $%*# did I just buy.

Hello all,

I am the owner of a few carts and a fairly accomplished tinkerer with all of them, mostly newer Club Cars (one gas, two electric). Stay with me here.

Over this past winter my father-in-law asked me to get his 1980 HD, which hadn't run in years, running again. After a pretty thorough overhaul the thing now runs like a champ which has led me to following conundrum:

I really enjoyed working on my father-in-law's cart and made up my mind that if I ever came across a similar old cart I would snag it as my own. Sure enough, I came across what I thought was an HD at a yard sale so I snagged it. The back end looked exactly the same as the in-law's though the front is a bit shorter. I assumed that it was just a newer model of my father-in-law's cart. The body is really rough but the engine is clean and runs......so I am told. I will post some pics over the next couple of days.

I get the cart home and do an inspection and, low and behold, there are lots of parts on it that look like the ones I am familiar with from working on my father-in-laws but other parts look different.

The vin tag says Columbia so I am assuming that's what I have. Vin # is
5K10276C5. I am thinking that this is a 1985 cart. Can someone confirm? I can't find the vin decoder page anywhere.

I know that Columbia acquired Harley carts at some point. Assuming this is a 1985, are they still reasonable to work on? Are parts still fairly available? Does the 1981 service manual apply to this cart?

I know this is a lot of questions to ask. I really do know what I am doing to some extent. I just bought this thing thinking it was something else and am looking for a little background to get me going.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

I don't know about the service manual but there are parts still out there. http://www.vintagegolfcartparts.com/...cp5/cp-app.cgi These people should be able to tell you if the service manual applies or if they know of/have one available.

One serial guide shows your cart as a 1985 Columbia DX4 and the people in the link above show a DX4 factory service manual for 1984-1986 DX4s.

Thanks for the reply. I have bought parts from VGCP in the past so I am aware of them. Actually, the cart I just bought seems to be a G4 rather than a DX4 given the information on the VGCP site (last two numbers are the year - 1985, first two are the model - G4). However, the service manuals listed here at BGW seem to indicate that I have the DX4 as evidenced by the key / choke location. Mine are between the seats as shown in the '82 DX4 manual rather than on the dash. I don't see this configuration in any other manuals. Additionally, my cart has a rectangular fuel pump that has two outlet feeds, one to the carb and one to the crankcase as listed in teh DX4 manual. What's up with that? I am assuming that the crankcase feed helps to draw fuel into the carb by "pushing" fuel in conjunction with the engine's natural vacuum.

Anyone know anything about these?

lochlin look at your fule pump again. it prob uses a pulse line from the engine drank case like you are used to with the kawaski onthe club car. they use the pulse line to pumpp the fule. one line to engine, one to tank and one to carb.

Last two years are the date code.

C=1980's
5=5

1985, and there's a 1983-1985 gas manual loaded on this site for it.

Thanks Tech. I found the user manual no problem. I believe this is manual you are referring to. I was hoping to grab a service manual too. I don't see a service manual specific for this cart here. If I am missing something please let me know. I am getting ready to jump into this thing and want to make sure I have the right documentation.

Again, I grabbed the service manual for the 1982 HD D3 / DX4 and scrutinized it fairly well. Unless I am completely missing something this looks to be the service manual for my cart, confusing years notwithstanding. The forward / reverse switch configurations are the same, the carb is the same, the fuel pump is the same, the accelerator / brake assemblies are the same, the starter / generator is the same (and is labeled as an HD), etc. The posted service manuals that pertain to all of the Columbia carts are clearly not for my cart as the above items don't match from cart to manual.

I believe I have solved this mystery. Several other sites that offer VIN explanations explain that '82 HD DX4s are the exact same cart as 85 Columbia 4 wheel gassers whose serial numbers begin with 5k. The '82 service manual should work as the part number relating to the service manual itself is the same from '82 - '85.

Phew.

Now I only need to figure out where to post future questions, in the HD forum or the Columbia forum.

Use columbia. The exact parts and service manuals are here, just use the columbia ones.

Tech, I really appreciate the feedback but unless I am missing something I don't see the proper manual under the Columbia links. I checked every single manual, even the electric ones, and all of the Columbia labeled links clearly don't apply to my cart. None are even close. If you could get me the part number of the manual that you are referring to it would be a big help.

All I can say is that the part number of of the HD manual matches the part number that numerous sites are selling for my year and model. Further, the manual for the HD is labeled "Columbia" on the front page of the manual but it also says for HD DX4 on the front page. Perhaps this is leading to some confusion. That said, this manual seems to match perfectly to what I see in the cart whereas none of the others, Columbia or HD, are even close. Without any additional information I am not sure I can go with anything else.

It's a 28MB file, so I split into two parts. The Columbia 83-85 Gas Service Manual. Here's part 1.
