Gas coming out of breather side 86 Par Car
I just replaced crank seals on an 86 par car and when I tried to start it, gas was pouring out of the breather side of the carb. The throttle butterfly is opening fine. What might be causing this?

Re: Gas coming out of breather side 86 Par Car
I would look at the float needle in the carb. Sounds like it is not closing.

Glad to hear that.....well.....glad you found the problem. I have cleaned my carb by boiling in lemon juice and it worked wonders.

Re: Gas coming out of breather side 86 Par Car
I may give the lemon juice a try. I got the new float installed and got the cart running for a while but when I installed the muffler it ran a while then quit. Took it off and got it running again. Reinstalled and it ran then quit. Took it back off and now can't get it going. I have tinkered with the timing a bit because it wouldn't run in reverse when I did have it running. Timing on this thing is driving me crazy. I switched from electronic ignition to points due to expense and the fact that 2 electronic modules failed on me. The last one will spark once when you start the cart then stop. After messing with it about an hour I gave up and returned to the points. Now, getting it timed is the trick.

I got the cart running but it still floods. If I shut off the fuel it runs great until the fuel in the bowl runs out. I don't have a throttle spring that closes the throttle. Could that be the problem?

Yes it should have a spring but in the case of our carts the spring helps to open the carb. The cable going to the throttle is what may need adjusting if it will not close properly. Mine would backfire slightly because the carb was staying open until I adjusted my cable to pull it closed when I let my foot off the pedal. There is a great how to video on youtube that shows how to set the timing. Look up harley cart timing.

If you are having anymore issues I can send some pics of my setup to your email....I seem to have the same cart as you do. My cart is a 1990 with points and bypassed oil injection.

Re: Gas coming out of breather side 86 Par Car
As stupid as this sounds, after all my work on the points and electronic module it occurred to me that the plug might be bad, so I changed it. Lo and behold, she fired right up. It's usually the simplest solution.
Now it starts up and runs great, but after about 15 seconds she floods and begins to die. I can turn off the fuel petcock and it smooths out and runs great until the fuel runs out. Turn it back on and it runs until it begins to flood. Gas spits out the breather side of the carb. I've put in a new float because the old one leaked. I've changed the needle thinking it wasn't seating . I can't get it to stop flooding. The carb is a Walbro 234, different from what the info I read states. I think standard is 230 or 231. Should there be a rubber seat in the fuel inlet that the needle closes on? If so, that is missing, but I had one from a briggs kit that seemed to fit but it didn't help with the flooding. If you have any thoughts on this problem, I'd like to hear them. If I could get that stopped I could move on to the battery not charging. LOL. Always something. |

My cart has a 231.....I have seen the rubber seat in some of the rebuild kit but not all. I am wondering if the float is working properly to close the needle. Would you say the choke is opertating correctly?
