Need help removing the fan nut
Hi everyone,
I have what I assume to be a late 80's par car. The cart was given to me, and I was told that the seals were bad. I've never really done motor work before, so this has certainly been a learning process. I currently have the motor stripped down to the crank case & shaft, cylinder & piston, and the fan mounting plate (?) I was able to find out how to remove the primary drive assembly via some of the posts on this forum, so that is already removed, and I now have access to the clutch side seal. However, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to get the nut off of the crank shaft, that's holding the fan plate on. I've tried attaching a jig to 2 of the holes on the fan plate, and then also attaching it to a spot on the crank case to prevent it from turning. However, I cannot seem to apply enough force on the nut to loosen it. In fact, I bent one jig, and completely broke another. I think another problem I'm having is I don't know the size of that nut, so I'm trying to use channel lock pliars to break it free instead of buying a deep socket that might fit it. Any ideas? |

Re: Need help removing the fan nut
Welcome to BGW
This is how i do it, the cylinder & piston are still attached to the case right ? if so, roll up a rag, or use a tennis ball, or about 3 feet of 1/8 to 1/2 inch string and put it in the cylinder and bolt the head back on the engine and that will stop the crank and piston from turning, and i don't think you will get that nut off with channel lock pliers, your going to need a socket, and if you can get an air impact wrench, or electric one that will help with the nut, or use a 1/2 breaker bar to break the nut loose |

That's a great idea. I'm going to give that a shot. Any idea what size that nut is? I've been digging through the service manual, but can't seem to find it referenced.

Re: Need help removing the fan nut
Not sure on the size, if you have a crescent wrench it might work, or you can use the crescent wrench to measure the nut size, a boxed end wrench or socket is the best you don't want to screw up that nut

Re: Need help removing the fan nut
Thanks for the help guys. I ended up buying a gauge so I could figure out the size of the nut. It's 32mm for reference. I couldn't find a 32mm deep well socket, so I bought a 1 1/4", and an impact driver. After a few seconds with that, the nut came right off.
