91 marathon intermittent spark
So on my 91 marathon with the 3pg engine when I start it in forward it cuts out and I tested it and the spark is not constant but if I start it in reverse it runs perfect! So what component in the ignition system would cause this? Thanks, DAve

Re: 91 marathon intermittent spark
There shouldn't be any unless your starter generator is crapping out.
Check the voltage at the battery in FWD vs REV. |

Re: 91 marathon intermittent spark
This may sound funny but it could be that in reverse the plug wire is connected at the coil better than when a forward motion. The plug wire at the coil screws on into the coil. Take it out by unscrewing it and see if you have a faulty wire or just get a new plug wire. Remember the wire screws off the coil. Also check very carefully the grounds at both the frame and block as well as the connections at the battery. You may also want to check the forward/reverse switch to make sure it is not dirty and giving a weak forward connection..

Re: 91 marathon intermittent spark
Good point. I will check my grounds and plug wire. I think I will jumper around the micro switch on the for/rev lever and see what that does.

Re: 91 marathon intermittent spark
the microswitch isn't there for Forward or Reverse, the big cables control the direction of the voltage for F/R (the microswitch is for the back-up alarm, that's it) ... I had a 1988 that did the same thing, it turned out that the Pulsar was loose and out of alignment, so in reverse it was fine but would sputter, cut out, etc in forward. Do the simple electrical checks (grounds, etc) and check the brushes on your starter first though, it can be a real pain to pull the flywheel and get at the pulsar to check it.

Re: 91 marathon intermittent spark
Well I kept running the cart to were it was doing the problem most of the time and it turned being a weak/faulty ignition coil. I have no idea why sometimes if it didn't start in forward it would start in reverse but all is good now!
