Default Considering a Workhorse, Please advise

Hi all. I joined the forums a couple of months ago when I began a refurb for my brother's '95 ez go electric. You guys are amazing and I was able to answer literally every question I had without ever asking. Thanks for that! Now that I've been bitten by the bug, I was looking into something for myself. My local CL has a '97-8 workhorse 800g for sale that's not running. I contacted the seller to find that the cart wasn't damaged by Hurricane Ike (I'm in Houston) but that it had developed a pinging in the motor that got progressively worse until the cart no longer turns over. I'm hoping the experts here in the forums can give me an idea of what I might be getting into. The asking for the cart is $500 and the body, bed, etc. appear to be in good shape (the seller informed me that the cart was an adult driven vehicle for their HOA/POA). I'm looking at picking it up by tomorrow because I know someone will snatch it at that price, so I need some feedback asap if I can get it.

Thanks in advance..

A true 'ping' is from low lead or low octane fuel? A knock on the other hand could indicate the need for a rebuild.....So as a buyer you need to assume it needs a rebuild and go from there,,,,,,,,,Good Luck

Thanks for the advice Scotty. I'm looking at rebuild kits online at it's looking like the neighborhood of $700, add to that the novice, aka me, who would be trying to pull it off and that's a considerable risk. Anyone know what a shop's gonna charge for a rebuild?

there is a company in Evans Ga, that sells rebuilt workhorse engines for about $550.00 after you send in a rebuildable core. J&M golf cart engines, Check them out. Also, i have a 98 - 350 workhorse and love it, got lift, mud tires, torgue pipe, k&N air filter, stereo !!! It's my all around baby !

Is he the same guy advertising on ebay? Sounds like alittle too good to be true. Bet you don't get a new rod or crank with that rebuild? I could be wrong but I would get a breakdown of what he is offering and a list of happy customers with phone #s just to be sure... I'm not saying this couldn't work out for somebody, I'm just saying that after investing in R&R and misc. stuff ... I would want a complete rebuild.

check your local small engine repair shop
Ask them about rebuilding a 2cylinder 350cc Robbins

Motors and more sells rebuilts for around the same price, He has are 2 shops in Augusta GA. There is also Golf Car Power Products in Augusta which sells rebuilts for around the same price. I would tend to go with Motors and more given the owners background and experience, but i'm sure the others are fine companies too. do a little research and see which is best for you.
sounds like a deal on the workhorse, great carts in my opinion.

Thanks for all the input guys. Just got it home and it's pouring rain in Houston right now. I didn't really get a chance to look it over too well, only enough to confirm in my already decided mind that it was well worth the price! The motor rolls over but won't try to start. Pulled the choke out and in a few times but still got skunked. I'll get on it again tomorrow and see what I can find out. I'm sure I'll be asking a bunch of questions in the coming days/weeks/months/years. I'll see if I can't post some pics for you guys. Thanks again!

Well, I got it put into the shop despite the mudpit yard and pouring rain. Pulled the seat off of it and checked for spark. I'm getting spark at the plug wire plug end, nice and blue. I sprayed some berryman's into the carb through the air cleaner and worked the throttle/choke a few times. I'm still getting squat. The battery sounded a bit weak, so I decided to put the charger on it and get some dinner in me. Anyone getting any ideas on why it would want to roll over? Oh, I raised the rear end for good measure (not sure if it helps much).

Here's some pics of it. I still need to clean it up, mind you, so please be kind.

I would look down the spark plug holes and make sure both pistons are moving, if so, adjust the valves, and run a compression test on it. If it was knocking that's usually a rod coming apart.
