Default Got 87 marathon stuck in mud now runs like crap

I got stuck Saturday night in a mud hole full of water while hunting and cart shut off. Finally got it running but would only run with choke half closed. Got it loaded on trailer and brought it home. Took carb off cleaned ,fuel pump cleaned, and cleaned fuel tank. Filled with fuel and it cranked right up ran great then it started surging and then was like the brakes locked up. Put it in reverse it runs great no surging or stopping at all. You think it could be the brakes ,the rear end or possibly one or both of the clutches?

I read a couple of post's today that sounds similar to your problem, they were having trouble with the starter/alternator smoking -- burning out brushes, etc.[[FORWARD ONLY]] This got me to thinking, did you check the cover beside the battery where the control electronics are mounted? It just might be full of mud/water, etc. and shorting out some of the electrical components. Or the starter/alternator may be full of muddy water and shorting out??
just my 2cents worth.

It was the pinion gear in rearend it locked up tonight while in reverse and the cart stood straight up. The only thing that stopped it from going over was the utility bed.
