Default 2001 ST350 Workhorse Smoke from exhaust

Hello to all, from the newly registered.

I have a 2001 EZGO Workhorse ST350. When running after it warms up I have a lot of smoke from the exhaust. Cart runs and drives but is very smoky once warmed up. Changed to new plugs and still smoking. I pulled the new plugs and they are wet with a brown liquid but does not smell like gas. I am guessing the engine needs a rebuild as this is Oil from bad rings? Any thoughts or suggestions welcome. I believe this is the PRE MCI 350. The motor Model is Robin Engine EH35C by Fuji Heavy Industries.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to BGW.

Check to make sure the oil hasn't been over-filled. If the angle of the engine has been modified, the dipstick usually isn't reliable.

Do a compression test.

What should the compression PSI be?

Read post 2... If the oil is too high this is exactly what the cart will do.. Or better yet, drain the oil and put in just a smidge less than 1.5 Quarts.. 48oz..

Should be able to find compression ranges in these.

Changed the oil and all was looking good until engine was under load then the smoke returned. Is it engine rebuild time?

Its possible but you really need to do a compression check to get an idea of where the engine is. Taken from the manual:

Indicates 140 psi (965 kPa) (Ref. Fig. 22 on Page
G-11). Compression is good and the engine may
be new or rebuilt. If the engine is new or rebuilt, the
compression will rise to approximately 160 psi
(1100 kPa) as the rings seat. If the engine has had
extensive use, a reading of 140 psi (965 kPa) may
indicate that the engine compression is in decline
and may need to be rebuilt when compression falls
to approximately 125 psi (860 kPa).
b) Indicates 50 - 60 psi (345 - 415 kPa). The rings are
in very bad condition or leaking valves are indicated.
Pour approximately one half ounce of thirty
weight oil into the cylinder through the spark plug
hole and recheck. If the compression increases 10
psi (70 kPa) or more the rings are in poor condition.
If little or no increase in compression is indicated,
the valves are leaking

Both cylinders read 190 psi. I assume then the bottom end of the engine is good but maybe needs it's valves adjusted. The passenger side cylinder plug is black and wet but the drivers side is just black. I would suspect these should be a brown color not black?

Thoughts for next check?
