Default 1991 GX444 takes a min to fire up and go

Hello all,

I just recently acquired a 1991 2-stroke Marathon (GX444). Most of the time it takes a minute to get going, when you press the gas pedal, it tries to fire and take off, but a lot of the times it is "delayed" in firing and moving, and then it will fire and then take off like it is supposed to.

Any thoughts of what it could be?

I do not know anything about golf carts, but were gonna learn!

Thanks,
Shaun

I don't and I do not mean to sound dumb, but I do not know how to check compression.

I will search and figure it out though.

I will be purchasing a compression tester here in a little bit, I will post the results when I have them.

Forward compression: 95
Reverse compression: 80

From what I can see, piston looks ok, when I push on the piston it does not move side to side...are the rings supposed to be loose to where I can move them with my fingers?

If that is accurate, then your compression is really low. It needs to be 120 or so.

That is what I keep reading...so I am looking at changing my piston/rings. The guy who I purchased it from talks about a seal off the crank shaft (clutch) that he thinks is no good although I cannot tell at this point.

There are 2 crankshaft seals and if they leak, will cause issues such as no fuel flow etc. The low compression will need to be dealt with first

Btw if you are pulling off the head/jug, then you can and should go ahead and take care of those seals too. As its sitting right now, if you can lift up in the clutch and feel play in the crankshaft, the seals could be bad.
