Default Manufacture/Model, does this really matter?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to see what opinions/experts we have, that might be able to shed some light on particular manufacture and even certain models. I currently have a 36v ezgo TXT and when we first bought it, we nothing about golf carts. After a little research, I found out that the TXT was supposed to be one of the better models. Not a lot of facts for that statement, just what I was able to find in reviews from other owners. I am now looking into the gas cart arena and want to know the same kind of info. I was told today that the ezgo RXV was not a good brand, that I should stick with club car. I found a local dealer that has a 2009 Gas Ezgo RXV for a reasonable price, but after hearing folks talk about the RXV, I am second guessing myself. What is everyone's thoughts on this topic? I am not in a hurry to buy, so I want to see what info I can poll from everyone. Thanks.

Overall IMHO and experience, the TXT up until 2008 and the Yamaha G22a ("GMAX") are hands down the two best gas carts out there. In 2008, EZGO switched to the Kawasaki drivetrain, the 13hp 401cc engine itself is decent however the RXV/TXT line with that drivetrain have been plagued by recalls, service bulletins, etc and have several inherent design flaws that make them (in my opinion) a bad investment unless You're willing to spend about $700 to remedy all the issues safety-related that still remain and resign yourself to driving a governed cart as bypassing the governors on the Kawi drivetrains has proven to often result in rear-end failure.

Club Cars are nice if not a bit aenemic power and speed-wise, if You're looking for a "Gas and Go" simple, non-modified cart they are fairly reliable but nothing to write home about. The Yamaha G22a and "Drive" carts have a great suspension, and with very few inexpensive (basically free if You don't want to go to far into it) tweaks can reliably run out in the mid 20's, faster with larger diameter tires. Also, if You're looking for off-road capability, Don Plowman sells performance kits in all price ranges and potentials that can turn a G22 or Drive into a seriously fast, powerful cart - and with different rear-end gearing, etc can net You a cruiser that will flirt with 35-38mph easily and still pull You up any hill.

The pre-2008 TXT's are the most powerful, smoothest driving and running engines out there, the 295cc and 350cc Robins Engines are bulletproof and low-maintenance - although if You're going to lift the cart the suspensions can be a bit spendy to modify for "TRUE" off-roading. If You're not going to be modding the cart to climb mountains and cruise the rough logging roads though, say You're wanting to cruise the yard, fields, trails, etc then hands down the pre-Kawasaki TXT is my choice.

Hope these opinions help, good luck with the decision!

BrewCityMusic, This is a great post and exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. My overall goal is to be able to cruise the neighborhood and if I chose to do so, then head down to the hunting club and cruise the dirt roads. I am not looking for a mudder, that is why I have an ATV, but I want to be able to take it hunting/camping without the worries of being tied to an electrical outlet. I found a 2009 gas RXV and was wondering if there is a list floating around of known problems that I could ask the dealer about and see if any have been taken care of. Again, thanks for the info.

Notice Brew said "Pre-08" They had an engine change after that and there are a few issues that have come up about that change. Stick with pre 08 and you'll be all set. Good luck!

Sccowboy,

Would you happen to know any of these issues? I have been searching the web and all I can seem to find are issues with the RXV electric. I am just trying to find out some of the major issues, so I can look for signs when I go to test drive the 2009 RXV. Thanks.

I don't have personal experience with that model but have seen many threads here detailing issues with them.... See below:

Thanks cowboy. I just don't understand why I can't get search results like this. I have been typing all variations in the search box and seem to always get electric threads. Thanks again, I'm going to read those two now.

If you used the advance search feature, you can tell it to only search a particular section. I knew that Brew had done a great write up on that topic so I just clicked his name and looked up all the posts done by him until I found the one that had the post I needed.

Ok, thanks. After all my research, I don't think it will matter now. I just left my local dealer with a new Yamaha Drive F/I model. I have not done a lot of research on the yamaha's, but what I have seen were all good. He gave me an awesome deal and with the factory four year warranty, I couldn't turn it down. Thanks again for the help, I'm sure I'll be over on the Yamaha side asking questions.
