'87 EZGO Marathon 12V Sag on Start
I have an '87 Marathon 2-stroke I have been rebuilding slowly. The engine runs fine once it gets moving (no speed demon though) but the battery voltage sags when I start. No one else in our club has a 2-stroke Marathon so I have no way to compare a different cart.
I installed a volt meter along with some switches and noticed on engine start the voltage was dipping into the 5-6V range. Once the engine was at top speed I was getting 16-18V. Eventually it actually fried my volt meter because of the fluctuating; I'm just guessing though because it was rated 3-30V. I haven't tried a different battery since all my deep cycles around the house are too large. The battery seems to charge well, but doesn't last past 15-20 starts. I'm not doing anything long distance on it, just around our boat club, so I imagine it's not getting enough from the charger while I'm running. Should I buy a new battery and try that or is there another issue happening here? I'd just hate to drop $50-80 on a good new battery only to keep having this same issue. Thanks! |

Have the battery load tested then look to the voltage regulator as a possible culprit. Shouldn't be hitting that high.... Normally around 14v. And pulling down to 5v on start sounds like a bad battery.

This thread has pictures of the voltage regulator from my 87. It also shows how to test them.

Cart, we need to see about getting your thread rewritten and then stickied. There have been several cases lately where that info has come in handy.

If it was a sticky, I wouldn't have any reason to come back every day.

Re: '87 EZGO Marathon 12V Sag on Start
It was the battery. Load test showed it was shot and after replacing it I haven't had any voltage issues.
Thanks for all the advice! |
