89 EZGO Textron Gas 2cycle Project
Hi, new to the forum.
So I bought a 89 EZGO Textron gas 2cycle as a project. Compression is at 30psi. Battery's good, spark is good. Flushed and cleaned the carburetor. Carburetor is newish. 1) Can anyone send me a link to the manual for this model? I didn't see it in the manual thread on here. 2) Can anyone tell me what the common problems are with this model? 3) Can anyone give me some tips for getting the compression up? My plan is to start taking it apart this weekend and investigating a bit. Any help is appreciated. |

First thing to do is figure out why you only have 30 pounds of pressure.
If it's just plain wore out, that could be rings, blown head gasket, or worn cylinder. Pour some oil into the spark plug hole, and do another compression test. See if it climbs any. There is also the distinct possibility that the owner before you failed at a rebuild. The piston could be in backwards, or the rings could be upside down. The most common problems are worn crankshaft seals, ripped diaphragm in the fuel pump, clogged muffler, and ethanol gas gumming up the fuel system. Good compression is around 120. |

Throttle open and full-speed cranking, for the compression test?

Thanks for the replies guys.
cart arouns, I'll give these things a go today and get back to you. It was running when I got it. Barely, not well at all. But then it just slowly sputtered and died out. The GDFP, yes. |

How do you tell if rings are upside down? I saw no markings on either side.

Re: 89 EZGO Textron Gas 2cycle Project
If you were able to straighten a ring out most aren't actually square or rectangle. One edge usually has a bevel or a groove on one edge. If the rings are put in the piston upside down most of the time the ring will bind to the piston when you try and compress the ring by hand. They should spring back and forth freely. Some rings have a dot on one side and that dot should be facing up. If no dot, and it has a bevel or groove on the inside of the ring, the bevel or groove should be facing up. If the bevel or groove is on the outside of the ring the bevel or groove should be facing down. If it has no dot, bevel, or groove the ring can be installed either way.

This shows the bevel on the rings. http://www.golfcarnews.com/gcn/?m=200805
There are pins in the ring grooves too. The ends of the rings should be aligned with them. Yours is a 3 pg. Your piston has 2 square holes in the side of it. Those holes should face the intake side. |

Dropped some oil into the plug hole and still no go. Thinking piston rings could be worn?

Also.. I was mistaken on the year. The serial number is a little worn. It's an 88.
