94 EZGO Marathon 4-cycle sooty plug and white smoke
This site has been a huge help since I bought a non-running, but in good condition, 1994 EZGO Marathon 4 cycle (Robbins 29C). I installed new plugs, a new air filter, a new gas filter and a new battery. I cleaned the gas tank, changed the oil, cleaned the carb (had to use a drill bit to remove the deposits in the jets) and replaced the hose on the bottom of the air filter. It runs now but it doesn't seem to have any power.
I also noticed white smoke coming from the exhaust and a dry black soot on both spark plugs. Compression is about 130 psi on both heads. The fuel pump did not appear to have any tears inside and the hoses appear to be in good shape. Removing the muffler and adjusting the valves to 0.004" did not help. I think the carb may be giving too rich a mixture. Your thoughts? Are there any other checks I can do to narrow the cause? Thanks in advance! |

Is the cart lifted, and how much oil did you put in?
White smoke is burning oil. Worn rings, or valve seals would allow oil into the combustion chamber. |

Thanks for the reply. The cart is not lifted and I put in about 1.5 - 1.75 quarts of 10w-30 in (about the middle of the dipstick when cold). Would I still get 130 psi of compression with worn rings and seals?

I would adjust the valves should be up around 160-180

I would run a healthy shot of Sea Foam through it before doing anything else.
It will definitely clean out your carburetor, and it just might clean your ring grooves enough to bring the compression up. That's if the rings are sticking enough to lose compression. You can test the rings by putting a little oil in the cylinder, and doing another compression test. |

Update: I re-adjusted the valves and added seafoam to the gas and oil. Compression gets up to 155 but I'm still not gaining rpms. Sooty plugs and white smoke are still there. Does this rule out valves and rings? Could gas mixed in the oil cause this issue?

Is the smoke actually white, or bluish-gray?

It's not very dense (can't get enough rpms) but my wife seems to think it is more white/gray than blue.

Re: 94 EZGO Marathon 4-cycle sooty plug and white smoke
How many rpms are you getting? Does the motor stumble at all?
I wouldn't necessarily worry about the smoke from the exhaust until you are able to get some heat into it and clean it out. Here's a few things to check... 1. Pinch off the fuel supply line going from the pump to the carb(vice grips). Run the motor and see if it runs any better. If it does, check the float setting. 2. Make sure the choke plate is staying open while the motor is running. Actually look at the plate to confirm this. 3. Make sure the throttle plate is opening and closing as it should. Not the linkage, the plate itself. |

Re: 94 EZGO Marathon 4-cycle sooty plug and white smoke
Thanks! It has enough rpms to "squeeze" the belt but not move it up. I wouldn't say the motor stumbles...more like steady a "wrap-wrap-wrap".
I can see that the choke plate is staying open. In fact, I can see a little bit of gas pooling around the bottom of the plate. I believe the throttle plate is working also. It worked when I pulled the carb. I'll try the vise grips next. |
