Default 1978 EZGO black motor - no reverse - diagnosis?

Like the title says, I have no reverse because the motor won't spin over all of the way as if the starter isn't strong enough backwards.

I am fixing a cart up for an older neighbor and need some assistance. First, the cart is wired exactly to factory from a diagram I found. It was close but not quite right. I had to redo several previous botch jobs but all is perfect now. The brushes (internal to the engine) look great and the armature shined up very nicely with little wear. I blew out any remaining dust. The engine with no plug will go forward and reverse without issue. Put in the plug and it will only start and run forward. I did get it to start a few times in reverse and once it spun past the compression stroke, it fired up and ran great. It starts easily forward and runs great. What do I need to start checking? When trying reverse, I hear a little "hum" from the solenoid and the motor tries quickly to spin but clearly doesn't have enough to get turned all of the way over. I have switched poles on the FnR switch (B and D) and again, it doesn't make a difference in strength.

Forgot to mention, the PO had installed a new FnR switch. I took it apart and there was some arcing evident. I sanded them smooth and reassembled. I would think it is getting a good connection here, coupled with the fact that the results were the same when I switched the B&D connections to the motor.

Thoughts? I really appreciate the knowledge base on this Forum!!!

You exactly describe the same issue I'm having. I too have replaced the FnR switch but that didn't help that problem (but it goes forward better now). Be sure an post if you figure it out. I need to go over the wiring in mine as someone has messed with it before me. From what I've read before it might be the starter/gen motor but I wish I could confirm before buying one.

I fixed it. All it needed was a better battery with good cold cranking amps. Runs like a champ both ways now! Do you need a copy of the 78 wiring?

Well I've been doing more reading on this site today and I'm not sure what I have now. The motor has the external starter/gen which means it's newer than 79. But the body looks older. I had just decided before you responded to pull the battery and have it checked. Easy to do and better than just swapping parts until it works better.
Thanks for the update, you've convinced me that is the best next step. At least the FnB switch I replaced was in pretty bad shape so that wasn't a waste of money.

Had the battery checked and it was weak so replaced it with a better battery. Unfortunately didn't change a thing. Back to the drawing board.
