aluminum rims stuck on the rear hubs??
So i have a problem! I have a 93 ezgo marathon and i need to change my rear drum brakes badly but my aluminum rims are either corroded or just stuck to the hubs!! Does anyone have any idea's how i can get them off with out wrecking my rims and tires? I've tried everything from prying between them with 2x4s and metal pipes to sledge hammers and chunks of wood and they will not budge?! Any idea if i heat them with a torch would help or would that wreck my rims?
Thanks for any tips!! |

I would not heat them up. Aluminum does not change color with heat. It will be there, and then it will be gone.

My F350 dually had the same problem. Aluminum rims against steel. Use leverage instead of hitting them.

Re: aluminum rims stuck on the rear hubs??
I had the same thing happen to both our S-10 blazer and our Envoy. I used a sledge and hit the tire itself some took a few whacks, but they did come loose.
I then brushed the corrosion/rust off and coated lightly with anti-seize when I put the tires back on. |

Try spraying a good quality nuts off etc, let it sit for a while then wack on the back of tire as mentioned.

Lay a bottle jack on its side between the wheels. Use a 4x4 to take up the extra space and press against both wheels. When one pops off, put it back on with the lug nuts, and press the other one off.

Thank's for all the tips!! The tires are still on the cart iv'e tried prying them off and hitting with a sledge hammer but no luck so i think i'm gonna try the bottle jack and see how it goes hopefully they'll pop off !

Re: aluminum rims stuck on the rear hubs??
Loosen the nuts just one or two turns and take it for a ride. We used to do that with cars and trucks when I worked in the garage. Nothing high speed but just a ride around the block doing some NASCAR tire warm up swerves.
Worked every time. |
