1989 EZGO Marathon No Reverse
I am hoping you can help me.. I have a 1989 EZGO Marathon. What function has to take place to get the rear end to go in reverse? Mine is a project cart that I am trying to rebuild and it is missing alot of pieces.. There is a little stub on top of the differential, is that the forward reverse mechanism? If not, how does the cart go into reverse? Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Re: 1989 EZGO Marathon No Reverse
Being an 89, I going to assume that it's a 3pg 2 stroke engine.
If it is, the engine runs in forward, and reverse. The nub you are looking at is for the governor. If for some strange reason you have a twin cylinder 4 stroke in there, none of that would apply. |

Re: 1989 EZGO Marathon No Reverse
Well this was someone else's project cart I bought.
It has a brand new 420cc Predator motor in it. Now I have no idea how I am going to achieve"Reverse" That's probably why it only cost me $400. |

Re: 1989 EZGO Marathon No Reverse
Now you need to find a 94, or newer rear end that has a reverse lever.
I'm not sure if they have the correct dimensions to bolt directly into your Marathon. The other option is to never park where you need to back up. |

Re: 1989 EZGO Marathon No Reverse
Witch way does the clutch on the axle go?
Parallel or perpendicular? That year could be either. A few ways do do a redneck reverse. 1. a rubber friction wheel between the clutches. Only a really weak reverse at idle or just above idle. 2. Add a rototiller style reverse. Large pulley to the driven clutch and a small on the engine. Then some guide rods to hold the belt in position and run a belt in a figure 8. Have to have a tensioner to pull it tight at idle or a little above. 3. Most complicated. A comet kart trans with reverse. 275$ on ebay new. Have to move the engine and mod up a mount plate and coupler. |

Re: 1989 EZGO Marathon No Reverse
Do you know anyone who has done the forward reverse transmission mod, like you explained in your last option?
Would love to talk to them and see pictures. My belt and pulpy runs vertically. Thank you so much for your advice. |

Re: 1989 EZGO Marathon No Reverse
Unfortunately the price went up again.
I have not seen it done to a golf cart but i have seen a lot of go carts, buggies, mini rails, and a mini bike with it. They did sell a kit for the same price with a cheapo 30 series clutch set. It would work but the 3/4 belt burns up quick with a 15hp engine. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Comet-Forwar...5UUPgP&vxp=mtr http://www.mfgsupply.com/218390a.html Has better details http://livesteam.proboards.com/threa...gas-powered-f7 looks good The carts just bolt it behind or in front of the the engine on the same motor mount. Cvt driven clutch mounts on the long shaft. Little shaft you mount a sprocket witch the chain drives the axle. Before you buy anything verify the direction of rotation of your engine and the current rear axle. They make so many different items and some other cart axles are reverse of yours. . This could also work if you have a current direction issue. Flip it around and use the box as a step over jackshaft. A used axle can be spendy and hard to find but if you can find one it is the best option for drop in. The easiest most getto i have seen was a horrid 2x4 bolted to a bracket on the axle and a harbor freight air up tire bolted up so it hit both clutches. Handle on the end of it with a bed spring to hold it up when you did not need it. Wish i had a picture. Worked just so so wrong how it was built. Found this on a search no idea if its any good. Might be a big pile o junk. Probably lighter weight would not trust it. http://m.aliexpress.com/item/32404368030.html |

Re: 1989 EZGO Marathon No Reverse
Thank you everyone for all your input.. I think the easiest way is just to find a newer rear-end with reverse capability.. The search is on..
