Towed 88 ez go, did i break it?
Newbie here,
I've got an 88 ez go, last fall i broke down in the middle of town (just stopped running). I had a buddy tow me back the quarter mile to my house, going what i thought to be a fairly slow speed. But now after trying to get it back running again i am at a stand still. ive read i should have pulled the drive belt to tow. Didnt have spark, so replaced the coil mounted on the engine, spark plug and wire, checked all wires with ohm meter. pulled the fly wheel and found that the the adjustment for the point type system had lost a screw and was loose. fixed it, but its still needs to be adjusted. have spark now, and gas. assuming its out of time, or (fingers crossed that its not) has very little compression. I guess long story short was wondering if towing it is the root of most of my problem. recently got an owners manual, so will be spending the day checking compression and going through the motor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks |

Re: Towed 88 ez go, did i break it?
No the root of your problem was that it stopped running before you towed it... While you were towing it was the engine making chug-a-chug sounds? If yes it was turning over but that was unlikely to cause any real harm or make problems much if any worse....
Fact that you have very little compression is what is keeping it from running... |

When it was towed it chugged like it normally would. Haven't checked compression yet, going to this afternoon. Was just hoping that compression isn't the problem.

Re: Towed 88 ez go, did i break it?
An 88 is a 2 stroke, and doesn't have any oil. It also doesn't have points. That means we need to establish exactly what you have.
The driven clutch is normally squeezed tight while sitting still. As the engine spins it with the belt, it opens up, and the belt drops in deeper. The drive clutch on the engine is wide open until the engine spins it. The belt should be loose, and not able to grab it until it squeezes together. Towing should not have been able to spin your engine, but if it did, it would not cause any damage. That is, unless you already had internal damage like a broken rod, or seized bearing. |

Well, im at stand still I guess. Compression test 130, I have spark, and I have gas going to the plug. Not gonna lie, im no mechanic, but those 3 combinations I should have a running cart. Air filter is clean, cleaned out carb.... any suggestions?

What do you mean you have gas going to the plug? Are they wet?

Re: Towed 88 ez go, did i break it?
Do you have an internal, or external starter? You mentioned the coil being mounted on top of the engine.
I believe an 88 coil is mounted on the cart, not the engine. I'm still wondering if you really have an 88. Can you post pictures? Engine, and body. The wet plug bothers me a bit. Start by reading this thread. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...fuel-pump.html Before removing the pump, see if it is shooting a healthy spurt of gas. After we eliminate the pump as a problem, we will think about crankshaft seals. Did it happen to backfire right before it quit? |
