Default 88 2PG act up again

Understanding that I had a previous post for a similar problem but it has been a while. I have an 88 EZGO that I have just rebuilt pretty much from the ground up. The Engine will start and run but only if I hold the choke half out. I had a previous issue with compression and a plugged up muffler but those have been corrected. Even though I dont think the rings are seated yet I am getting 125 psi compression and have cleaned the carb six differnent times now. I have checked the fuel pump and it is good and the bowl is full of fuel. I have smoke checked the engine looking for vacuum leaks and cannot find any at all. All bolts have been checked for tightness at least six times over. The muffler has been baked and cleared out.(working in a shop that does heat treating helps!!) I baked the muffler for three hours at 1300 degrees. Trust me there is no build up left. I have taken off the air filter and have a strong suction from the engine, If I cover the intake partially it acts like the choke and will run. When it is running it must be running really rich because the fumes will bother my eyes. Could this still be a timing issue and how do I know if it is right, I set the timing to where it was when I took the Engine apart but have know idea if it was originally correct. Needless to say the frustration is driving me nuts! Any suggestions on what to check next would be appreciated.

Rich

Thats what everything pointed to, I have removed and cleaned the carb six times. The last time I did it I even had a friend who is a mechanic watch me to make sure there was nothing that I could have missed

Yes it does, I have been a mechanic for twenty five years and have fixed everything from Jet engines to Gas and Diesel engines. Now I feel stupid because I am letting this litttle two stroke kick my @#$$#@!

They are a lot harder to get right than a Briggs

One thing that is sometimes overlooked is the metering jet in the bowl nut and the 2 side holes that feed it , I cleaned one 2 times once upon a time and didn't notice those also using a tip cleaner on all the side holes in the vertical brass tube , but I'm the only one who wouldn't notice these points the first time .

I have checked and rechecked the carb, The one thing that I question is how do I know that the jet is right or that other parts on the carb have not been changed. I know the carb is the right one for an 88 and all the numbers match what I think it is but I cannot find an exploded view or any kind of spec on the carb?? Anyone have a manual with an exploded view or at least just a good diagram??

Well we finally think this thing has been conquered. Turns out the bushing for the Choke is allowing air to get sucked in, I have not been able to find any kind of rebuild kit yet so have installed a new carb and she runs great. Still going to talk to some friends at work and see if they can make me a bushing.

I have an 85 EZGO gas doing the exact same thing right now. It wouldn't fire or even pull gas from the tank (I have a glass fuel filter so I can see the flow) until I noticed if I put my hand over the carburetor intake and the suction seems to make it start firing and pulling gas into the filter. I don't get what is going wrong there. Guess I am going to start taking stuff apart again. It was running so great for a while. pfffft
